Person: Panthers "have their eyes on" Eric Weddle

Weddle might be a 3 time pro bowler. But is he capable of being a pro bowler right now? We need to offer him money for what he is, not what he was.

I'm interested but this guy isn't close to Eric Berry, Troy Polamolu, or Ed Reed. He's a nice player that made a few pro bowls.

was berry really that good this year? No denying he has a great story, but comparing him to troy and ed? I really don't keep up with the chiefs, but my understanding was he comeback and played well. I didn't understand the franchise tag on him either. Idk maybe i should research him

He's 31. He's got a few years left.

Though his combine numbers are what I'm going off of, he ran a 4.38-4.48 in the 40.

He's missed 7 games in 9 years. 7 out of 144.

Weddle runs like a 4.7 at best now, there were games last season where he was the weakest link on SD defense. Tight ends were blowing by him.

And every other week he was on the injury report with some nagging injury. I would rather look for somone young not a Harper clonde

Corner is only a big need if we're assuming that Josh is definitely only a 1 year rental, which I don't think is set in stone. As far as an immediate need, safety is definitely bigger. Harper wasn't great but he was better than Boston and it was still a weakness. Boston could improve this offseason, and I really like him, but adding Weddle would be a huge upgrade.

If Josh is a 1 yr rental we are in

need of 2 cb's .

From Weddle

Weddle said he feels like he would be a good fit with the Patriots, Panthers, Steelers and Raiders. King notes that the Raiders have to spend a lot of money this year to satisfy the terms of the CBA, which could give them a leg up in the chase for a player like Weddle as he could step into Charles Woodson’s spot in the lineup while taking some of that money that needs to be spent.

Translation --thte Raiders have a ton of money and I want a big chunk of it

I actually don't think so either because of money, but it can at least be said that the interest is mutual.

Not really. Interest from the Panthers is pure speculation at this point. Basing it on past offseasons that were lacking starting safeties. No longer the case.

I'm not yet convinced Boston is full time starter material, honestly.

You know how I know you don't watch football?

That said, I would love to have him here at the right price.  We will likely be starting Bene on the outside, and a younger player/new player at the slot....with Josh on a one year rental as the other starting CB.

We probably need a vet back there that knows football inside and out to pair with TD and Luke.

Yeah, after reading the MMQB blurb on Weddle, i am 99% sure he isn't coming here.  He spoke at length specifically about the Pats being among his favorites, and it just sounded like he's expecting a bigger deal than we would be willing to offer.

I feel like DG and our staff like Tre enough that sure, they'd look for a potential upgrade and/or competition at the position if it's reasonable, but if not, they're perfectly happy with going into the season with Tre as the starter opposite Coleman.
