Say what you want about Joe Person, he gives some good insight on the Panthers' thinking about free agency this year (which in some cases applies to every year). Even for some of us know-it-alls, reading this Q&A is a much needed confirmation during this expectant time of year (if only to keep our "reality" in check).

"Q. So with all that cash available, this is the year Gettleman splurges on a big-name free agent, right?

A. Not exactly.

That’s not Gettleman’s approach, regardless of the Panthers’ cap positioning.

'We have not spent big money on a free agent. You guys know that,' Gettleman told reporters at the NFL scouting combine last month. 'It’s about your own, your core.'

Gettleman pointed out the Panthers shopped at Tiffany’s last year by taking care of their own, re-signing Cam Newton, Greg Olsen, Luke Kuechly and Thomas Davis to long-term extensions."

Keep the insight coming, Smoking Joe!

Joe knows no more than we do.  However, Gettlemen should re-sign Star first---(this brilliant strategy is from Mangus) because Star will sign for about $8m.  KK next, who will command $13 or so.  If KK signs for $13, Star will want similar money (Theoretical).,  Personally, I think Star is WAY under appreciated and is as good as KK at what he does.

I like the "sign your own" approach.  A known commodity is always a better investment than speculation about how an outsider will fit. Think about it--how many free agents go to other teams and under perform their contract?  I bet its 80%.

I'm totally good with how Getts approaches FA. I'm just wondering who we're going after for a high-profile position like DE where we're gonna have to shell-out some serious change for a productive vet until we can develop one of our own.

Gets said it takes 3-full years to really develop players at high-profile positions, so we should expect a contract to a solid DE for 3-4 years, regardless of who we draft.

Basically, because of our SB appearance, we're without a true first-round pick that we can count on as coming in to start right-away.

This is probably true regarding DE, and suggests that we probably will bring in a vet if the price is right. The question is which one.

This is the same thinking across our entire team...I call it the "which comes first...the chicken or the egg effect."

Is it because Star is garnering double-teams that KK got so many sacks, was it because of our secondary? It's an in-depth and complicated question(s) that have to be evaluated.

Personally, I think it's a team-wide thing, including being able to rest our defenders because of blowout wins, and because we had the top-scoring offense (helped out by our many defensive scores,) and our heavy rotation of DLinemen, KK got the most benefit out of everyone.

Without CJ and the loss of a good part of our DL rotation, this next year will be the litmus on how truly good our interior line is. It's a good problem to have and we all know we get the best out of our players come contract years.

On another thread, someone explained that Star and KK have pretty different values.  IIRC (I may be way off) folks said Star is basically a 2 Tech while KK is 5 Tech and they have different market values....

Doubt we'll pay Star 1st since we can exercise his 5th year option.

The fact he refused to answer the question about the teams pending free agents is a joke. They literally have two people doing one persons job below adequately.

I don't understand why The Observer needs two people to cover a pro football beat, plenty of papers in bigger cities got one guy covering their NFL beat.

Yes. However both are pretty versatile which is exactly what Rivera loves. Either at strong would be a huge huge upgrade from Harper. I think Weddle would play free and move Coleman to strong which I actually think suits his skill set better, but they would both move around. And I could see packages with Weddle as nickel and Bene and Norman outside with Tre and Coleman playing back probably Kurt at free and Tre at strong. Would be a very exciting secondary with Weddle added and Bene outside full time and Josh still here. Need to boost that pass rush though. Our 2013 D was better than 2015 despite a mediocre patchwork secondary because of how damn good Hardy and CJ were.

I think our money can be better spent elsewhere. Signing Weddle would limit us and be the only big player we could sign. Neither he or Coleman are a prototypical SS which we need to uphold our physical approach.

I'd love to keep both of our interior starters, but the beauty of this draft is that its heavily packed with top-notch players at our positions of need.

Picking-up a DT or 2 in this draft could make Star expendable once his contract is up.

Ghe one takeaway is that KK and Star basically got starter's amount of stats from day-1 and its one of the main positions where a rookie can come in and produce.

i still expect us to re-sign Love and get more snaps for Delaire. So we're definitely still good up the middle. It's the outside in worried about...but Getts wouldn't have let Johnson walk if he didn't have a plan in place to re-tool our edge rushers.

maybe not quite expendable, but a rookie stud certainly could take the sting away if we can't come to terms. And there are a lot of good DT's in this draft. I'm also still waiting to see what happens with Coples.

We have to get a DE or maybe 2 in the FA market. We just have to. I don't see any other way around it.

Im hoping we still have Big Frank and Addison, because they're no slouches (well, I really don't know what to say about Frank,) but at least that would give us some options if all else fails.

Hopefully we can get Josh to come to terms before the franchise tag deadline is up, which should free up some money that's kind of ham-stringing is right now.
