REPORT: Charles Tillman and Cortland Finnegan will not be back

It's always hard to know how seriously to take Person, honestly.  I tend to give him the benefit of a doubt, but it does sometimes backfire.

Whether I wind up buying or not tends to depend on whether it seems believable given other factors.

The Cornerback Clubhouse suddenly has too many vacancies. Makes me a little ill at ease, but the record (so far) shows that Gettlemagic can fill the empty spots with capable players. Look for some forum drama if they don't use a high draft pick on a CB though.

The CB position has had plenty of vacancies for several seasons - not just a sudden occurrence.

Last I checked the Panthers had to bring in 2 CBs off the streets (who they do not deem good enough to keep) to fill key spots at CB because they could not rely on the CBs on the roster. The sad part of the past 3 seasons at CB is the CBs off the street for the Playoffs/Super Bowl are better than all but 2 CBs Gettleman has added to this team in the off season. Then you have Charles Tillman who is at the end of his career and can barely make it through half a season as the best addition made by Gettleman, and Bene Benwikere who should have been better than them all, but failed to elevate himself to the starting role.

Melvin White, Drayton Florence, James Dockery, Antoine Cason, Carrington Byndom, Bene Benwikere, Teddy Williams, Charles Tillman, Robert McClain, and Cortland Finnegan are the CBs given to the team by Gettleman.

I believe this list of CBs makes most ill at ease.

Seems like the Panthers find better talent coming off the couch in the season than they do with fresh young players in off season. Unfortunately, I expect more of the same this off season at the CB position.

The ongoing CB issue is well known, but 2 guys being announced as not coming back, at the same time, is a sudden occurrence, and emphasizes the state of the patchwork secondary in a louder voice. Tillman and Finnegan may have been band aids, but they weren't being universally trashed as 'got to get rid of' players.

Personally I think the secondary's time has come to be addressed in more than a band aid fashion, and I predict a more solid group next season.
