A look at 2017 Compensatory Picks (Updated 5/19)

So apparently Gettleman knows what he is doing.  Only one of our current FA acquisitions actually counts in the compensatory pick calculation.

If Fernando Velasco was given a large enough contract by Buffalo, Carolina may see a late compensatory pick in 2017.

Still have a number of FAs on the market. They must sign before June 1st in order to count towards Comp picks.

They would.

For my understanding and those reading the thread, would you expound on the reason why Harper and Cotchery would net us a comp pick while Dwan Edwards and Nate Chandler, whose contracts also did not expire naturally, would not?

Harper and Cotchery had voidable years in their contracts, meaning when voided, their contracts expired like any other UFA.  Edwards and Chandler were released.  Their contracts were active when they were terminated.

Thanks for the info, Doc

As of now, this nets us a 7th round pick.

If you're going by Overthecap's estimates, while they do have the value as a 7th round pick they also have it ranked 34th. Of course, only the top 32 actually get picks.

That said I don't understand why Velasco ($965,000) wouldn't cancel out Gradkowski ($1,050,000) instead of Nortman ($2,200,000). Seems like the former two should actually cancel out, and Norman's $2.2M should put us near the 6th/7th round line, or at least move us into the top 32.

I'm not thinking we're going to have much shot at comp picks next year.

Cotchery & Harper I assume are both gone, but I'm not positive they'll be signed by anyone else.  Same with Tillman.  If he's not with us, doubt he'll be with anyone.  Same with Finnegan.

Frank Alexander won't be signed by anyone given that he's suspended through late November.

Green - I know nothing about how he's recovered from injury.  Assume he'll be let go.  Don't know if he's done or not.

Tolbert, Silatolu, Velasco, Nortman - I'm thinking we're quite likely to resign all of them.  If any of these go, these would be the most likely to get us comp picks.

Webb, Love - I consider LOCKS for us to resign.  If for any reason we can't reach a deal, then yes, they would be signed and could help us get comp picks.

Right. we're got getting anything next year and that's fine. It means we didn't lose anyone of significance this offseason.

We're already slated for a 7th and I think we're done bringing in till after the May 12th cut off.

Amini has had a number of visits too.

    • I’m not suggesting that tanking is the right thing to do every time. I do think that if you have guys like Burns and Moore that you will trade anyway, then you should think about tanking and getting max value, especially if you want to grab a QB that might go 1st overall. We tried to do both. Trade CMC for picks but don’t take 3 1sts and a 2nd for Burns and Moore. Instead, we won a few games and then threw in Moore on a trade because we didn’t tank and we gave Burns away for a 2nd. Can you honestly say that fully tanking, by trading away all our best guys who weren’t in future plans, in 2022 wouldn’t have made our team better now? We wanted a rookie QB and we didn’t extend the main guy we didn’t want to trade. We were 100% in full tear down and we could have been a playoff team last year if we used the 4 extra 1sts or 3 1sts and 2 2nds (counting picks saved on Young by being pick 3 or 4 not 9) on D. Culture building is funny. It took three coaching changes to seemingly get there. Morgan and Canales weren’t in charge when we “protected” our culture. We still traded Burns and Moore, we just lost 3 first round picks in the process. Also, do you think the Eagles are in a bad place because of their coach clearly tanking a game for a draft pick? Remember that? It was obvious and the coach was fired. The funny thing is that this is something teams do all the time but they add their stars (like Cam in 2016, CMC, Burns, etc.) to IR or rest them in week 16/17. Pederson was just dumb and made it obvious. He could have just sat his starters to start. Anyway, did that incident tank risk their credibility? Did Barkley decide to not sign with them? Seems like their SB win and other SB visit say they are just fine. Winning makes culture, picking the right coach makes culture, trading away guys who are on other teams in a year for top picks and keeping more picks by having a better starting pick to trade up, does not impact culture. If it helps you win, culture will be fine, ask the Eagles.
