Neither one of us know the specifics of it, but mine is far closer than any scenario you have yet proposed.  Imo, and apparently the opinion of most who have commented on the situation, both sides are being business like and practical. We will just have to agree to disagree.

How is it far closer?  CJ was under performing for the past two years and has a massive contact. The lemon is not worth the squeeze so to speak.

I'm confused.  His salary this season would have been 15 million.  We saved 11 by cutting him with 4 million dead.  If the 4 million was already paid, then why is it factored against the cap for this years original 15 million salary?

not arguing, just don't understand how it works.

His cap figure this year would be $15M, not his actual salary. When a player signs, they normally get a guaranteed signing bonus as part of the contract. While the signing bonus is paid up front, the cap hit is split between the years of the contract.

So let's say we sign Player A to a four year contract with a $12M signing bonus. While the Panthers are actually paying him the entire $12M up front, the cap hit for the bonus would be $3M each year for the duration of the contract.

The $4M of dead money represents the prorated amount of guaranteed money that was given to Charles Johnson when he signed/restructured his contract. It's long been paid, we just don't see the effect on the cap until now.

Most contracts in the nfl have large signing bonuses that are paid upfront.  They split that amount over the life of the contract for salary cap purposes rather than requiring a huge cap hit in year one.  However, that money is dead if the player is cut.

Actually, I had the same confusion and had it explained to me this way---the $4m was converted to a restructuring bonus (from unguaranteed money) as part of a restructuring process.

Free agent Charles Johnson will visit with the Giants on Sunday.

It's Johnson's first visit since his release. He would give the Giants a proven pass rusher if they don't re-sign Jason Pierre-Paul. Johnson is also expected to have interest from the Saints.

Saints don't really make any sense for him. He'd probably need to drop 15 lbs to be a good 3-4 OLB and seeing as how money appears to be his primary motivating factor I can't imagine them being able to pay more than we or anyone else would. That is probably him going on a date with his ex's enemy to try and make them jealous and take him back.

Giants make sense for him. Tons of cap space and a real need at 4-3 DE.

Think of it this way. Cap space = Salary + Yearly Average of Signing Bonus.

When CJ goes on to New York and continues his solid career, I wonder which Huddler will begin the poo talk about him being out of shape and unmotivated while he was here...

If he loses 15 pounds, stays healthy, and regains some lost explosion, then yes, I'm sure it will probably be said.  IMO, the problem for him recently, though, has simply been health.  He's been nicked up for two years now, and that has severely limited his production on the field.  IF he can stay healthy, I think he can still be effective.  However, that's a big IF.  Is his body starting to break down, or was it simply a matter of unfortunate, but non-chronic injuries?  The next year or two will tell the tale.  But I expect anyone he signs with to hedge their bets a bit, and probably the most he can hope for is a modest contract with some incentives built in.

I don't think it's such a big "if", but I admittedly might just be being a "homer" that CJ's leaving still hasn't hit yet. Moreover, I believe that if he signs a modest, incentive-laden contract, it will be with the Panthers.

I've been saying that I felt he has come in to camp out of shape for the last couple years. It explains the early season soft tissue injuries and total lack of early season production. It's taken him about 6-8 games to finally get going the last two years.

I'm not not about fringe players, or pratice squad players who get signed and dropped every week. I'm talking about tenured players, who became salary cap casulaties. E.g Cj, Smitty, Andre Johnson, Reggie Wayne's of the world. Can't recall ever seeing that happen

Bwahahaha......told ya so.
