Here's that table with the DEs again, including Height, Weight, college, games in 2015....

Some of these guys need to beef up honestly.  Ealy is a good marker.  You don't want to be much smaller than him, if you are going to be a full-time DE, in a 4-3 defense.  Of course guys like Addison are specialty players(passing downs), and you need them, but the guys getting most of the snaps need to have more beef to them.

Chances are Gettleman will draft a DE and proclaim that the Answer Is On The Roster again... and be right again. The money is better spent on a couple of mid-price FAs and the rest used to shore up other portions of the roster.

He pretty much said it at the combine.  He mentioned Cox and Miley specifically.

Agree with both of these comments for the most part.  It's not Gettleman's style to go after another expensive FA to replace CJ.  BUT.  Look again at that table with the DEs.   Apart from Addison (who is not an every down guy), they are youhg guys, and all have 0 - 3  years playing experience.  Never started a full season.  (Well Horton came close filling in for Hardy in 2014....)  So, I see us bringing in a solid seasoned vet as a leader for this group.  Another Jared Allen type.  Not necessarily flashy or expensive, but someone who can mentor these young guys.   There's no way they'll rely just on these unproven starters / rotational guys.

Before everyone goes off on the "Grab JPP or SuperMario" tangent, remember why Johnson was cut: Late career player whose performance and injuries made him unable to match up with the pay he would have received. Mario and JPP are the exact same guys in the exact same situation. Those star names come with big price tags and only a very small chance for a return on the investment.

No they aren't the same.  Charles Johnson NEVER produced like Mario Williams.  Mario is ONE year removed from a 15 sack season.   Face it, CJ was always overpaid.

We're not saying he won't bring in veteran guys.  Just that he's likely not bringing in the vet guys that a lot of people want to suggest.

So this pretty much guarantees a Coples signing right? Were not going into next season with just Ealy and whoever else. Coples adds us some depth and is a possible breakout star in this system.

Agree.... though there is talk that Ron sees Coples more as a DT than a true pass rushing DE.  So even if we sign Coples, we still might need more DE help in free agency.

Just to remind everyone....Gettleman doesn't play. Produce up to your contract's standards, or you're gone.

Worrisome part about this - is the first two went on to have revitalized careers elsewhere..

I am very disappointed.  No long are people able to say "move Johnson to the inside and get penetration".  Oh well.  I just hope Cox has a breakout year so I can say "maybe we lost our Johnson but our Cox showed up big this year".

I always saw Coples as a run down DE, 3rd down DT, think he'd pair nicely with a rookie in the draft.

I'm not sure it guarantees anything other than a vet signing, not sure it's Coples.

If Mario is motivated, and isn't looking for another break the bank contract, I could see DG bringing him in for a look, he would probably excel here playing beside KK, Star, and having Luke and TD be able to cover.

Last year he was asked to drop far too much, and they ran a scheme that wasn't a fit for his skill set.

Again, would have to be a "good" contract for him to suit up here next season.
