So, with Jared's retirement, CJ's release, and Frank's suspension through late Nov 2016, here's who we have as DEs as of right now, including PS & Futures Contracts guys:

Horton and Miley look like the likely replacements at left end that are on the roster.  Curious to see how Miley has developed but that position sits as a big question mark currently.

Can someone explain to me why we want Mario Williams?  I mean, I know the guy has produced, but he is 31 years old.

I'm not totally on the bandwagon pushing for Mario.  But Kony is still quite young and not entirely proven.  Think we want a proven vet as one of our DEs.  If not Mario, someone else.  Also frees us up to go BPA in the draft and not have to trade up for a DE in desperation.

I would agree to a point but this is the best crop of interior DL we have seen in a while.

i think we could let Star walk at the end of his contract if Getts has a DT targeted at our draft position.

A new contract for Star wouldn't be outrageous, compared to a DT like KK.  People don't give Star nearly enough credit for what he does.  He's not a stat sheet DT, and was never meant to be.  He's extremely valuable to that d-line.

He's one year removed from being an all-pro basically, just didn't fit in that system.   Peppers is 36 and had 10.5 sacks last year.  You can't always go by that.  Obviously we won't give a monster contract but he may want on a winning team, etc.

Before everyone goes off on the "Grab JPP or SuperMario" tangent, remember why Johnson was cut: Late career player whose performance and injuries made him unable to match up with the pay he would have received. Mario and JPP are the exact same guys in the exact same situation. Those star names come with big price tags and only a very small chance for a return on the investment.

Chances are Gettleman will draft a DE and proclaim that the Answer Is On The Roster again... and be right again. The money is better spent on a couple of mid-price FAs and the rest used to shore up other portions of the roster.

It is this time of year people crave a big name signing. I'll personally would rather leave that to the Bucs, Raiders, Jags, Browns, Bills, Redskins etc.

    • Hope Koch recovers (he’s stated numerous times he doesn’t like to be called “koochie”) soon. But he does not instill confidence in the crease. I don’t have any confidence in any of our goalies, healthy or not. Andersen when available gives us the best chance to win but he’s never available.    Team has to explore trade options soon.
    • Respectfully, I completely disagree. Last year we were:  32nd in Sacks. 32nd in Turnovers.  32nd in Rushing TDs allowed  29th in Scoring.  We were absolutely atrocious on defense last year and that was with a full stable of weapons in Derek Brown, Frankie Luvu and Brian Burns that played all 17 games.  Using yards per game as a metric to guage our success lacks the context that because our offense was so inept teams were not driving the length of the field, they were starting at their 40-50 yard line.  This year, our Defense ranks:  31st in Sacks. Tied for 19th in Turnovers  31st in Rushing TDs allowed 32nd in Scoring  His defense fails to get pressure, fails to turn the ball over and fails to stop the run. Three things you absolutely have to do to be successful in the NFL.  Denver meanwhile has not missed a beat without him.  If another team wants to hire him as a HC and the Panthers get two 3rds for it I'll wish him the best and pack his bags myself.
