REPORT: Panthers to re-sign WR Stephen Hill and T Mike Remmers

Approximate RFA tender amounts are:

1st round: $3.5M

2nd round: $2.5M

Original round: $1.5M

If you tender and then someone else signs the player to an offer sheet then the tendering team can either match the offer or accept compensation equal to the tender value. For original round you get a pick that corresponds to where the player was originally drafted up to 2nd round. If the player was undrafted like Remmers then there is no compensation if you decline to match. It's similar to how the non-exclusive franchise tag works.

We would most likely do the 2nd round tender on Remmers because no one is giving up a 2nd round pick and a big contract for him, but they might if they didn't have to give up anything. The extra $1M is worth it to guarantee he is back.

For Hill since he was drafted in the 2nd round the original round tender is the exact same compensation wise as the 2nd round tender, so we would do that if we were to tender him but I see no reason to pay him that much when he could be had for minimum.

The transition tag is the one where no compensation is awarded if a tagging team doesn't match an offer. The non-exclusive franchise tag nets the tagging team 2 first-round picks if they choose not to match an offer, while the exclusive tag does not allow tagged players to negotiate with any other team.

Yeah, I was referring to the process of tendering then being able to match or take compensation instead as being similar to the franchise tag since most people understand that. May not have been clear the way I wrote it.

Alexander might be re-signed.  Just might be to a cheap offer rather than one of the tenders.

Pretty well guaranteed that if he is, this is his last chance.

Even if they re-sign him, Alexander is suspended for another year.  He's never playing for the Panthers again.

And not Frank Alexander

I think basically we don't have to do ANYTHING with Frank until late November.  He's suspended through then.  Can't play with any team.  Can't practice.  Doesn't get any pay.

So, I could be wrong, but I would assume that even if there's a chance the team wants him back and is willing to give him yet ANOTHER chance, it's not a question that needs to be addressed any time soon. We'll have a much better position to know if there's a need for him or possible role for him on our Dline come September - October.

Alexander, if he is smart (and let's be real, he's not), should be shooting for the 2017 season. Work hard on cleaning up, get some coaching on a daily basis and earn his way back to being an athlete. Otherwise he's just another guy with immense potential that threw it all away for nothing. If he doesn't work himself near to death to get it back, I wouldn't even bother sending someone by to check on him. There's plenty of guys out there killing it for just a tenth of the chance Alexander has had.

Hill, meh. Hasn't lived up to that 2nd round pick and hasn't had much of a chance here due to injury. Sad breaks, but he should at least get a shot through training camp to see if he can really do anything.

Remmers is money well spent by us. The guy did pretty well for us last year, short of the Superb Owl when he got hung out to dry by the team. If Remmers is your problem on the O-line, then you really don't have much of a problem. If we went into next year with him as starting RT, I wouldn't bat an eye or worry like I have in the past. He's above average to good, and that's rarer to find than you'd think at this level of play.

    • Hope Koch recovers (he’s stated numerous times he doesn’t like to be called “koochie”) soon. But he does not instill confidence in the crease. I don’t have any confidence in any of our goalies, healthy or not. Andersen when available gives us the best chance to win but he’s never available.    Team has to explore trade options soon.
    • Respectfully, I completely disagree. Last year we were:  32nd in Sacks. 32nd in Turnovers.  32nd in Rushing TDs allowed  29th in Scoring.  We were absolutely atrocious on defense last year and that was with a full stable of weapons in Derek Brown, Frankie Luvu and Brian Burns that played all 17 games.  Using yards per game as a metric to guage our success lacks the context that because our offense was so inept teams were not driving the length of the field, they were starting at their 40-50 yard line.  This year, our Defense ranks:  31st in Sacks. Tied for 19th in Turnovers  31st in Rushing TDs allowed 32nd in Scoring  His defense fails to get pressure, fails to turn the ball over and fails to stop the run. Three things you absolutely have to do to be successful in the NFL.  Denver meanwhile has not missed a beat without him.  If another team wants to hire him as a HC and the Panthers get two 3rds for it I'll wish him the best and pack his bags myself.
