No one is giving up two 1sts and an enormous contract for Josh. You might as well get that thought out of your head now because there is zero chance it happens.

Two firsts? Doubt it. Heck I don't know if anybody's given up two firsts since we did it for Sean Gilbert.

An alternate compensation package though? Maybe.

I'm not betting on either, though. I think Voth is right. Norman plays out this season under the tag.

Where is the link where we used the non-Exclusive tender vs the normal Franchise tag?

nfl.com just says franchise tag... or am i just an idiot and they are both the same.

Think the non-exclusive IS the most common tag.

Here's more detail at Panthers.com

http://www.panthers.com/news/article-2/Panthers-Place-Franchise-Tag-On-Josh-Norman/90228de3-39fc-40d9-896d-16c63dc3ae02

CHARLOTTE – The Panthers applied the non-exclusive franchise tag to cornerback Josh Normanicon-article-link.gif on the deadline day to do so.

The tag keeps Norman in Carolina for the 2016 season and gives the team until July 15 to negotiate a long-term contract.

"Josh has worked hard to develop himself into a very good player," general manager Dave Gettleman said. "We appreciate the role he plays for us in our defense and we look forward to having him back for the 2016 season."

As a part of the non-exclusive franchise tag, the Panthers must tender a one-year qualifying offer of the average of the top five cornerback salaries from last season relative to the current salary cap. Other teams can approach with offers, but the Panthers can match and would receive two first-round picks from any potential suitor if they choose not to match.

First of all none of us have the ability to see in to the future so never say never and second I'm well aware that getting two 1sts is very unrealistic but I'm just pointing out that Gman and RR aren't necessarily ruling out getting some type of compensation for JNo if an offer was made. Everything they say publicly until a deal is officially done will more or less be media fluff.

The exclusive tag is pretty much reserved for franchise QBs only since those are really the only guys worth giving a huge contract and two 1st round picks up for so you might as well save a few million by using the non-exclusive version. Rare case for Von Miller where the exclusive tag and non-exclusive tag will cost the exact same so he got the exclusive version. The exclusive tag has only been used on 5 other occasions since 2007 on a non-QB. Richard Seymour in 2010, Terrell Suggs in 2009, Nnamdi Asomugha in 2008, Dwight Freeney in 2007 and Lance Briggs in 2007.

Lesson learned for Josh on all of this.  Imagine if he had signed his contract last year and lets say it was 4 years, 28 million spread evenly.

He would have gotten a nice bump in pay last year and already be under contract for this year.  So after this year, he'd have a little over $14 million in the bank with 2 years left on his contract.

Instead, he played for peanuts last year and gets the franchise tag this year.  How much will he have made during last year and this year?  A little over $14 million and no years left on his contract.  With his 30th birthday staring him in the face.

It's in his best interest to sign a long term deal before the summer deadline.  Stop throwing away money, Josh! I beg you.

if we did a negotiated compensation deal like that then it would be between the Panthers and the other team to decide when those picks would be.
