Coples would be a great signing but if we do not hear anything by the end of tomorrow it is not a good sign.

Not sure about that. We waited a few days before anything became official with Ginn and Oher, as I recall they didn't sign until right at the comp. pick deadline (this year that's March 9th).

Coples would fit perfectly in our 4-3. I see him replacing CJ for a few years. This could lessen the need for a DE in the draft even though I do believe we would still need one on the first round. Signing Coples gives us more flexability in the 1st and 2nd rounds

Coples was giving up on for a reason. I don't know that reason but I am far from thinking he would have a bigger impact than CJ.

While reading this thread in one window, in another window I've got the current version of Walter Football's latest mock draft running.  Following the combine with new Big Board rankings, the good DE's & DTs are getting snatched up early in the 1st.

11 of the 28 first picks going to DE / DT / OLB (pass rusher).  Shoring up our DEs through free agency looks wise as the good ones could fly off the board in the draft.

  • San Diego Chargers: DeForest Buckner, DE/DT, Oregon
  • Dallas Cowboys: Joey Bosa, DE, Ohio State
  • Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Leonard Floyd, DE/OLB, Georgia
  • Oakland Raiders: Emmanuel Ogbah, DE, Oklahoma State
  • New Orleans Saints: A'Shawn Robinson, DE/DT, Alabama
  • Detroit Lions: Sheldon Rankins, DT, Louisville
  • Atlanta Falcons: Jonathan Bullard, DE, Florida
  • Buffalo Bills: Shaq Lawson, DE, Clemson
  • Seattle Seahawks: Darron Lee, OLB, Ohio State
  • Green Bay Packers: Kevin Dodd, DE/DT/OLB, Clemson
Kansas City Chiefs: Vernon Butler, DE/DT, Louisiana Tech

Seeing this makes me think we may steal a skills player late in the draft.

Obviously if he took a physical then the intention is to sign him. Just waiting for it to becone official. Never hurts to beef up the dline with young talent. You win the game in the trenches

Its bad if the young talent cannot learn on the field. I wonder if it was not for Jared Allen taken all the snaps from Kony, would we have seen more games from him like he played in the Super Bowl. We have real good talent on the bench that just needs snaps.

I agree that Jared Allen inhibited Kony Ealy but maybe he also taught Kony something knowing that it was his last year.  Still Im not a fan of this restructure Charles Johnson for longer, I know he is not old but his production value is horrible.  Factor in his salary Id rather spend it on a veteran or draft pick to be used in a rotation with the rest of the guys there.

Has he not been in a 3-4?  In a 4-3 he could be perfect.

Free agency starts on the 7th doesn't it? Can you sign someone who was cut at any time or would we have to wait? I know this answer but forget poo every single year.

Players like Mario Wlliams and Quentin Coples can be signed right now because their former team released them, essentially ripping up their contract and immediately making them free agents. Players like Doug Martin and Jason Pierre-Paul who have not been released can not be signed until March 9, since their contracts are good until the end of the 2015 NFL year (March 8 at 11:59 pm)

It actually starts the 9th at 4 PM. They changed it from a midnight start a couple years ago. The legal tampering period begins two days beforehand.

Cut players are free to sign right now. "Legal tampering" period for upcoming free agents starts the 7th, but no contracts can be signed until the 9th.
