Coples visiting, taking physical

J Jones backs up what I was thinking re: why Coples was released from the Jets this year

Reports out that Panthers have Quinton Coples in for physical. That'd make sense. His struggles in NYJ seemed to be related to position move

Also, there's now a short article at the Observer about him:

With Charles Johnson in limbo, #Panthers bring in free agent DE Quinton Coples. 1st reported by @Rand_Getlin. http://www.charlotteobserver.com/sports/nfl/carolina-panthers/nfl-blog/article63309837.html

Pretty much. I think Ron and Dave just found their Dwan Edwards replacement. Look for us to still look for a big name DE in FA.

Exactly, Dwan replacement with some versatility. Kid has potential so we take him to camp and find out. Low dollar signing we high reward possibilities

Huh.  I remember a lot of people wanting to take him #9 back in 2012... instead we drafted "another linebacker" in that Luke Kuechly guy.

Now we could end up with both.  Funny how things work.

Same kind of thing with Olsen, IIRC... Quite a few wanted Greg but we took Beason. A few years later we got the beast of a TE in 88....

Yes, because:

A) Ron wanted to convert him as a DT

B) Bowles stated that most of Coples production came as a 3-4 DE (that be a 3-tech DT in a 4-3 scheme).

Yeah, a lot of Jets fans seem to think that inside is where he was his best. He struggled as a 3-4 OLB and wasn't very good as  a 4-3 DE when they ran those fronts.

Ah, that makes more sense then.

I don't care where he plays for us. He has a chance to play at a very high level in rotation with our guys.
