Coples visiting, taking physical

Nice move, always felt he was miscast as a 3-4 DE in the Jets scheme. Stout against the run on the edges and has flashed some elite pass rush ability. If nothing else, he would be a solid vet in the rotation at a reasonable price.

Also, signing him would be a little more leverage in our efforts to get CJ to take a pay cut... demonstrates that we're positioning ourselves to move on if need be.

Quotes from Jets fans on Reddit after he was waived midseason:

Quote

"He flashes for 4-5 plays a year then jogs/disappears the rest of the season"

Quote

"I agree with you, there. He isn't really fit to be an OLB in a 3-4 Defense at all. He played pretty well at (3-4)DE when we first drafted him, and I think that's where he needs to be"

Quote

"Supposedly a very nice guy and consummate pro"

Quote

"Bowles said in his press conference that he doesn't think he's suited to playing outside. He thinks he can have success as a DT but there's obviously no room for him here."

Quote

"In Bowles' system his job was to rush the edge and get to the QB. He even played in 4-3 fronts. He simply wasn't able to get the get it done.

His best games were actually as a rookie when he played more of a 3 technique DT but I can't see him making the transition back at this point."

Quote

"Hope he can turn it around under a disciplinarian. Dude played with no motor or heart for us."

Quote

"He has a lot of physical talent but hes lazy and has no motor. He also has 0 pass rushing moves. He can be a decent depth player but not for us and I like the message it sends."

Quote

"Anyone who is excited about Q needs to temper their expectations. He's a low motor player who has consistently under performed since the day he was drafted. This cut is most likely to prevent his 2016 money from becoming guaranteed with injury.

He's had potential but it's fairly clear that he has a low motor. The was one of his biggest dings going into the draft and he's done nothing to prove otherwise."

Quote

"He would be a lot better as a (4-3)DE. Why the Jets never tried to trade him is beyond me."

Quote

"He's been playing out of position since he got here. He deserves to be a 4-3 DE"

Schemes in parentheses were added by me for context of the scheme that was being discussed.

If we get him this will be a nice pickup. I don't think he's played in a 4-3 yet has he? Point is, he's better at 4-3 and poo

Was in a 4-3 for 6 games in Miami last year after being claimed on waivers, but that's way too short a time frame to know anything.

He is a natural fit for 4-3 and its not like where asking him to be a starter. He will learn a lot from Coach Washington & CJ as he gets acclimated back to 4-3  DE  this off season.

Gettleman's MO.  Fill in holes in Free Agency to leave freedom to draft BPA and not based on need.   But yeah, with the depth of exciting prospects at DE and even more at DT, I'd be pretty shocked if we didn't pick at least 1 - 2 Dline guys, and likely in the early rounds.

Was about to say this same thing.  This year unlike the first couple of seasons.  He has some cash to spend and I would welcome this move.  Some players just do better with their hand in the dirt.

Plus it doesn't hurt Coples is a former Tarheel.

If we get Coples it'll be important to somehow retain CJ, maybe primarily for his leadership.

I just do not see the point in keeping CJ unless he takes a drastic pay cut. He did nothing for us this past season and has been on a steady decline. Maybe I am wrong but I haven't looked at CJ's stats just what I am feeling going by watching every single game the past 4 years. If we cut him we have more money to spend on more productive players correct? How much would cutting him save us?
