Has Gettleman signed an outside free agent to a deal longer than two years yet?

I'm thinking no.

no he hasnt.

I was just saying that 5 years on 15 million for a 25 year old talent like Coples would be highway robbery.

Again, might be.

From what I've seen though, Gettleman doesn't make that kind of offer to anyone who hasn't already proven himself in our system.

And honestly, I think that's a smart tactic.

Lots of teams commit big deals to guys that looked good playing for someone else only to later realize they're a bad fit or a product of the previous system rather than a quality player.

Our process seems to prefer waiting until someone shows they can perform at a high level in our scheme before setting them up long term.

We’ll see about Coples, but reminder of why FA leaving w/o signing doesn’t mean he won’t: Michael Oher did 9 days after visit last year.

The phrase "left without signing a contract" has caused way more consternation on this board over the last few years than it should have.

He is the same height and weight as Mario Williams, plus he played at OLB this past year. If I was him, I'd want to play DE where the money is better and the pounding is less. If I was Gettleman, I'd say no way QC, you're too slow and I'm not paying to finance your delusion. Quentin's got to swallow his pride to play here.

When RR was talking about coples, he referred to him as DT. Coples on the outside is the reason he's been cut twice(drafted team and former jets GM)within 3 months. Could he lose a few LBs, work very hard and maybe be a OK 4-3 DE......but not like a human freak super Mario ala peppers. He could play DE on goal-line/short yard packages, other-wise he better play inside or get use to sitting on the couch.

Edwards is 34.  As you saw when we released Colin Cole during the season, if Panthers can get younger and better at Dline, they will.  And of course KK & Star are entering contract years, so adding depth makes sense.  Even though Edwards has been solid and his contract isn't up this season, I could see us releasing him if other, better players are available.  Let Edwards & Coples compete in camp.... Don't take any player on the roster (except perhaps Cam & Luke) for granted.  Competition for all.

You are right. I'll just add Edwards is unquestioned leader of the DL group. Many think it's CJ, but it's Edwards. I'm always for competition . I'll also add when a group is uber strong in the draft, it kills the FA market for said group. Especially depth guys like love and I'd even put coples in that group now. I'm willing to bet the panthers offer a min type deal and coples agent said no thanks. Coples is in a odd spot. Hes a talented former 1st that's been waived by the team that drafted during the season, claimed then waived by the GM whom drafted him. Those are two BIG believers that no long believe........that's a giant issue in my book.

O and injuries happen especially older players. Regards to KK and star, both have already two more years here. Star has 5th option and for sure tag KK. That's besides that, Dave is doing everything to extend both before year 5. Coples is just added to Dave's long list of players.

I doubt his total contract value is anywhere near $15 million. He's been cut by two teams now and has proven very little in the NFL. He's most likely looking at a cheap one or two year prove it deal.
