Separation has nothing to do with scheme. That's personal not scheme.

Another thing to consider is the offense we run, and the big plays that we attempt a couple times per game.  I'm guessing we are top 10 in the NFL in those "big play" attempts.

But, that's not to say that even the dropped bombs, aren't working.  They are doing a job, weather Ginn catches them or not.  You keep the defense honest when you attempt a few of those per game, and you wear out the defense by having them cover 30-40 yards downfield.

[...]

When you run a Coryell system, you are going to leave yards on the field...you are also going to demoralize a defense when you hit those 60 yard plays.

Nice points.  Agree.  Just the threat of Ginn MAKING the catch 50% of the time changed how defenses were forced to play us.  Was HUGE.

I'm certainly no expert on WR catch mechanics.  KB looked amazing and wasn't dropping much of anything during the preseason if I recall correctly.  Funchess' drops declined sharply through the season as well, so I'm not too concerned about either of these guys having major long-term drop issues.  They're both so young still, think there's still improvement ahead.  Ginn though, we probably still have to expect drops   He is what he is.  We have to take the bad (drops) with the good (game changing speed)...

Somewhat agree.  KB can't really create separation, nor Funchess, yet, but Ginn, Philly, and Olsen all do.

When you run a Coryell system, you won't see them get open like you will in a West Coast system, or a EP system.  But we also have a QB that likes to rely on his athleticism and size to get him out of trouble, and often holds the ball longer than he should.

It's a double edged sword.

Smh, Ginn probably accounts for 300 of those yards. I guess you take the good with the bad with him, but seeing those gifs of all his dropped passes sting a bit. Wish we could get a sure handed, speedster in here. Also, with Cotch possibly gone, we're going to need to get a sure handed guy over here. We don't have that currently

The Ginn drops suck, but he changes the way defenses play us because of his speed.  Ginn is still one of the fastest WR's in the league.  A WR corp of KB, Funchess, Ginn, Philly, & ??? is still a lot better than some of the WR groups we've trotted out over the last 10 years.  Add in Olsen and that group is pretty solid.  I think we may add a WR via FA or late in the draft but we have way more pressing needs (DE, S, OT) to address.

Additionally, on game day, we usually only kept 5 WR's active (and usually Webb was the 5th) so I think unless something changes, the active WR corp is pretty much set with KB, Funchess, Ginn, Philly, & Webb provided everyone is healthy.

I think an upgrade at TE behind Olsen is more likely.  Dickson wasn't terrible by any stretch, but he's definitely not a #1 TE and we need to develop someone behind Olsen.  Everyone had hopes for Swole Bones that never came to fruition.  Wouldn't be opposed to signing Vernon Davis if it's relatively cheap and seeing if he could return to form.  Would much rather that happen than signing a FA WR.  Just my opinion.

IMO, its  a little of both.  Cotch isn't going to get much separation on a deep route, while a guy like Ginn is best on a crossing route or a deep route, and might not get as much on more complex routes.

And what makes it all the more sad is that is a volume stat. It measures purely how many yards were dropped...Yet Cam Newton threw the ball less than almost every QB in the NFL.

We were the only team to run more than pass and our WRs still lead the league in a stat like dropped yardage.

But when anyone suggests that we should POSSIBLY look into getting not only KB back but possibly another WR too, many on the Huddle look at you as if you have 5 heads and act like we are rolling out Prime Jerry Rice, Prime Calvin Johnson, and Prime Randy Moss with a healthy WR core of KB, Funchess, Ginn, and Brown...

Here's the rub with this thinking....that would be a Macy's type purchase, and we have had to shop at the 5 and dime until now.

We could afford Ginn the first go round mainly because he doesn't have good hands, were he to possess Moss/Rice type hands, he would still be in Miami making top 5/10 WR money.

I too would love a shifty precise route runner, with some wheels and hands, however there just aren't many out there, and the ones that were hitting the market, we couldn't afford....see Jeremy Maclin.

The issue isn't that many of us don't think that we need more talent, the issue is that many of us know that it's not so easy to find "good" talent, and it's even harder to afford it with our past salary cap woes.
