What to think about Baylor Basketball's Rico Gathers?

So Rico Gathers, Baylor's all-conference power forward basketball player, is interested in working out for NFL teams and follow in the footsteps of NFL standouts like Antonio Gates & Tony Gonzalez.  Gonzalez played both sports in college and was drafted in the first round; Gates, like Gathers, played only basketball in college but had a football history before.  After the 2003 draft, Gates signed as a UFA with the San Diego Chargers and the rest is history.

Gathers is ginormous...6'8" 275 lbs...some sites list him at 6'6" 275.  That's 20 lbs heavier than either Gonzalez or Gates.  This fits with Gettleman's "big men help you compete" mantra, but is he too big for TE?  And how in the world do you evaluate him as a prospective NFL player?

Would our GM role the dice on someone that's huge and athletic and has pretty high potential but no history to go on.  Would you consider him as a 5th or 7th rounder or hope for the best at UFA-time?  Or just say forget it?  What think the huddle?

    • I'm seeing Walker in many, if not MOST, of the more recent mocks for the Panthers.  Here's my problem, He's not a tackling machine and that's what you want out of an ILB.  He's a 'tweener.  Are we playing him inside or outside?  Sack production is 'meh' for the outside, not so much a QB terror  and inside he's not a ball hound.   This is culminating to be a typical Panthers pick.  You see how 'tweeners end up here with the mismanagement of Jeremy Chinn.
    • Yes, this same logic could also be used for every player on our roster and practice squad. I wouldn't include basically any of them in the "potential core player" category as I basically outlined it. I don't see him that way because he was a rotational player and I am not sure he will be more than that here.  If I am wrong and he really flourishes here, great. That contract will make a lot more sense and I will have more faith in Dan & Co.
