The last time Gettleman franchised a player....

Gettleman Franchised DE Greg Hardy.

2 Months later, Gettleman drafted Kony Ealy in the second round.

Gettleman will most likely be Franchising Josh Norman soon.

2 months from now, he very well could draft a corner early, rounds 1-3.

Gettleman sees the franchise as a 1 maybe 2 year rental. Gives him time to find a much less expensive replacement.

While I do acknowledge you have more access and insight (doing a great job btw) to the team, I think you are off base on this one.

1 time of using the franchise tag is not enough to set a precedent.

Going with your example, if Ealy wasn't there would have Gettleman drafted a DE in the 2nd? Highly doubtful. It was just truly a BPA situation.

The whole Hardy thing was big blunder anyway and again that 1 example alone is not enough to make assumptions on.

Much less expensive replacements to Norman aren't out there. Norman is that good. We have the cap space, we have a proven player in our system. Plus Gettleman said himself something along the lines of us not being a farm team that develops players for other teams.

tagging norman twice  would be the equivalent  of a 2 year  28 million  guaranteed contract. a 4 year contract couldn't be that much different  in guarantees.

That's why I think tagging him twice is the best course of action. It's going to cost about the same to tag him as it would to lock him into a long term deal so why not keep him in contract years and mitigate risk of him falling off after getting paid or being locked into a huge deal if he hits 30 and falls off sharply. The second tag will be around $16-17M so it's really 2 year/$30M but I'd much rather do that than give him 5 years/$70M which is probably what his agent will be looking for.

I truly think DG wants to sign Josh to a 3-4 year deal, with most of the money up front with an option in the final year.  Though he doesn't believe in 'shut down' CBs, I think he knows Josh is top-5 in the league, and was a major reason why opposing offenses struggled against us.

I think the franchise tag is a back-up plan if Josh and his agent try to get $15M+/year.  We're going to end up paying him $14M on the FT, mind as well pay him that but lock him up solidly for at least 3 years. I'll take a 31 year old Josh Norman playing the final year of his deal over having to try and find a top-flight CB1.

Did I miss something?  Have we officially franchised Norman?  In Gentleman's last presser he was talking about getting Norman signed to a new deal and seemed relatively optimistic about it.  Maybe that's changed.  Even if we do get Norman signed, CB is still a need.  We only have two proven quality CBs right now and your 3rd CB is essentially a starter in today's NFL.  We very well may pick a CB in the early rounds regardless of what happens with Norman.

Some points:

Gettleman will not overpay for Josh, but he will give him fair market value. In that sense, I don't know that 59's contract has anything to do with this.

Ron already said that he isn't concerned about J-No's age in his presser yesterday, and G-man likely feels the same. Corners have a relatively long shelf life.

G-man already tried to lock Josh up, so he actually wants him long term. Hardy's situation was different. He was essentially a one year rental.

Sure, G-man may draft a talented corner in the draft if said corner is the BPA. I don't think that it will be a reflection on Josh, as much as it is a realization that Peanut is in the twilight of his career. Of course if a deal can't be worked out with Norman anything can happen. At the end of the day, G-man is not going to leave value on the table. If corner it is, then corner it is, but it's not going to be because of the Norman situation per se.

I believe Gettleman sees DBs like this: Savvy veterans on low cost deals and late round picks. This strategy really works if you can rush the passer. The veterans can take advantage of errant throws and the young bucks can learn from the veterans so we can develop our own talent.

Yep, I think one thing we can see from Gettleman's history on our team is that he's going to try to improve the level of talent wherever he can.  Apparently, according to Rivera and Gman, this draft is good in areas we need more depth/talent: DL, OL and DBs.

Could be fun!

I totally expect them to play FA as well now we are out of cap hell. Replenish in FA and reload in the draft.

Yep. Enjoy Josh while you can, folks. He doesn't appear to be budging and GMan doesn't pay corners. If a deal gets done, GREAT, but I'm not holding my breath.

Please, elaborate on what evidence you have that Josh isn't budging and Gettlemen doesn't pay corners.

I'm genuinely interested because there hasn't been much news on the subject other than them saying they are working on a deal. Josh is a Carolina cat through and through and seems to be a little bit more of a homebody than someone like Greg Hardy.

I think that Getty is always looking at BPA, and Ealy very easily could have been a 1st round pick. A good DE who has dropped down the list is a no brainer. If Getty has to franchise Josh (and I suspect that it will), it doesn't necessarily mean he'll target a CB.

My opinion is based on what Josh has said and 3+ years of following GMan's GM decisions. Josh wants way more than the Panthers are willing to pay him. Unless he backs off to about 7-9MM/year, I THINK we let him walk after he collects that $14MM check.
