Bene to compete for corner, not nickel

Really illustrates how Gettleman prefers to build his team. I'm not sure any other position group got less attention as far as resources spent: castoffs (Harper, Coleman), minimum-salary vets (Tillman, Finnegan), late-round draft picks (Boston in the 4th, Norman/Bene 5th, Marlowe undrafted), and eventually hungry guys off the couch (Young, McClain) made up the defensive backfield of one of the best defenses in football.

It's kinda crazy/cool that we're looking at starting 2 small-school, 5th round corners on either side; meanwhile it's possible all the guys in front of them will be former first or second round picks. Makes it feel pretty unlikely Gettleman goes DB early, just keep finding those gems on day 3.

EDIT: I also think these means we'll see more of our base 4-3, and less nickel (which has probably more accurately been our "base defense"). Really hoping we see Shaq move to full-time, essentially playing a nickel and LB depending on the situation.

Anyone concerned about Bene's size hasn't met him. He is plenty big to be an outside corner in this league.

Hope my question wasn't misunderstood.  I'm not at all concerned with Bene's size.  I was thinking it was BECAUSE of his size that we might be moving him outside given that there might be some shorter guys we like who could play Nickel.

Agree that we will not likely draft a corner in the 1st or 2nd rounds.  By talking about our draft position above, i was merely trying to say that any big corner we might have wanted to target would likely be gone already.  I think we can probably get a good shorter corner who could play the slot in later rounds.

One thing no one's really mentioned in this thread....by announcing this change, it sounds like Ron is assuming Peanut is gone.... not really a surprise.  It was great to have him this past season.  I would love it if he could stay involved with the Panthers going forward.  He's such a class act, and his ability to create turnover opportunities (and remind the other DBs of those opportunities) was a huge part of our 2015 success.
