REPORT: Charles Johnson, take pay cut or be cut

I'm hoping Johnson agrees to take a pay cut. Even if he tops out as just an average pass rusher when healthy from here on out, his ability to force fumbles and play stout run defense still has plenty of value. Him at LDE and Ealy at RDE can still be a good starting tandem.

Not sure what they mean by a "pay cut" but he's been willing to restructure several times, don't see why he wouldn't be willing to do it again.

Restructure and pay cut are different.  CJ is selfish and more than likely want take the cut.

It is not just about saving the $11m, it is also about getting something for the $4m that would convert to dead money should he be cut.  So, if you look at it as if we stand to lose $4m by cutting him, what is CJ likely to get on the open market?  With 1 sack or so in 2015 and a history of injuries of late, there is little to market.  At 30, he appears to have something left in the tank.  How much would a team pay for him?  Remember, the fact that the Panthers asked him to take a cut and didn't show interest in re-signing him means that his value is well below his price.  I would say he would find it difficult to land a deal for more than $7million per season.  So Carolina would actually be getting him for $3m this year, if that is correct.  Who else could we get for $3m?

HOWEVER, Defensive Ends can't develop on the bench.  So playing CJ and hoping to squeeze another year out of him at 30 (He is an old player for 30--10 seasons) may be counterproductive in the long run.

I see him becoming a Falcon--going home to Atlanta and getting pumped up vs. the Panthers twice a year.  I see this offer as a "let's see if they will bite" offer before cutting him.

All that to say: I think we lose the $4m, give Hurney the dumbass salute, and move on.

Where'd you hear this about the players vs management story?

Can't  answer for him, but when Gettlemen got here, he made some enemies, one could assume.   Gross mentioned it in his retirement speech.  I remember the players laughing to reporters about their mega-deals when Marty had something like $70m in cap space and used it to re-sign players off a 2-14 team (and 6-10 the following year, going from memory).  DG came in here with a hatchet and was not popular--but who can argue about his approach now?  3 playoff appearances, an NFC title, 3 South titles, etc.  Point being, if anyone did not like him now, they would be fools to say so.  Can't argue with the success.  Still, this comment was based on current situations and cannot be verified.

Why is it so hard for everyone to believe CJ may take a pay cut

I guess we will see soon if he cares more about dollars or rings, so close to the ring here, how could he just jump ship now

His self imposed nickname is Big money. Nuff said

would be nice to see him take a cut though and go after a ring here.

I would assume the only reason he hasn't been cut like so many others is because the team is trying to work something out with him.  Doesn't mean he will stay however since I can't imagine him leaving too much money on the table to stay here.

Self imposed? Didn't his teammates give him that name? I recall he said he didn't like that name. I think when cam or Luke signed their extensions or when they got drafted he said something along the lines of "they can't call me big money anymore" meaning someone else's contract was bigger.

It it is reasonable he does a restructure or pay cut. He likes it here and knows what we have is going to be special. If he gets cut (especially with big frank being a question and Allen retiring) then I will be shocked.

I don't know about the name but it's on record that CJ loves his money and hasn't been willing in the past to take a pay cut. There is absolutely no blame or ill will I have towards him for that. He got that contract fair and square. Marty was a terrible negotiator.
