The Witch

Saw "The Witch" Thursday night after waiting over a year for it to come out. The film premiered at Sundance last year and won Best Director along with the praise of film critics everywhere.

I have to say, "The Witch" did not disappoint. It's a must-watch for horror fans. I'm a big fan of horror, and it easily is in my top five. If you're a fan of films like "The Exorcist", "The Shining", "Rosemary's Baby"...stop what you are doing and go see this movie. If you like to feel genuinely freaked out, go see this movie. If you're more into the casual date night horror films, you may not like this. It's not your typical Hollywood horror film. It's an art house film in the mold of Kubrick. One reviewer stated it well saying you have to buy in to the mood of the film.  Once you're immersed into the setting, the climax will have your jaw dropped, or if you're like me, have your hoodie pulled over your head and eyes glued to the screen.

This film has next to zero comic relief. The dialogue is authentic 1630's Old English, and there were a few times I couldn't understand what the hell the characters were saying. The cinematography, acting, directing, wardrobe...everything about this film is top notch.

I can't give away any details of the film, it's best to not know any of the plot going in.

If you must watch a trailer, watch this one as it doesn't give away as much as the first trailer

I can't stop thinking about the movie. I've rewatched the trailers a dozen times since I saw the film just to get taken back into that world. Definitely going to be seeing it in theaters again.

Thanks for the write-up. I was between this and Deadpool for an afternoon flick this weekend, and I think you just sealed the deal for The Witch. No trailer for me on this one. Going in fresh.

Good call. I saw Deadpool last weekend and loved it, but The Witch is on another level.

Yeah, this one is gonna stay with me for a while. What an experience...fantastic film.

Of course, I was in a theater with a chatty couple who made stupid remarks to each other the whole time (mm-hmm, damn girl put on some clothes, etc). So annoying and just a defense mechanism for how freaked out they actually were. Luckily they were on the opposite end of the theater from me.

Anyone seen goodnight mommy? This looks on par.

I have seen that. They do share similar qualities, but I would say "The Witch" is much better. I would like to see GM again, as apparently I was one of the few that were actually surprised by the twist.

Leaving the theater after "The Witch", the one film that came to mind was "Antichrist", which is another film that will stick with you a long time after you watch it.

Torture porn, huh? I think I'll give that a miss, then.

There's only two quick scenes in Antichrist that would qualify as such, and yeah they are brutal lol. But the film overall has some of the best cinematography I've ever seen, plus Willem Dafoe.

It's a totally fuged up movie, and even with those two torture scenes, it's mostly a psychologically mind fug.  So only watch it if you're into that sort of thing.

i came in doing a search for horror movies to watch and saw this thread.

i saw the wich last weekend. a lady i work with was telling me about it and said she was going to watch it online and i thought i would as well.

i saw a couple trailers for the movie and the movie i saw was NOT the movie that  was in the trailers. i mean technically it was, but the way they tried hyping this movie....i can tell why there were probably more people disappointed with this movie than there were who enjoyed it.

this wasn't a fast paced movie at all. there wasn't anything to jump out and say "boo!" like so many other horror movies. nothing to make you jump and i think that was some of the genius of this movie.

the whole time i was watching this i just had this feeling that something bad was going to happen and while it eventually did, it didn't seem to finish to me. there was no closure to this movie. when things started going wrong, the dominos falling for lack of a better description, you didn't get to see where the dominos stopped.

i was uncomfortable and unsettled the whole time i was watching and the movie ended with me feeling the same way. it honestly just left me hanging in kind of a uncomfortable limbo.

my dad's side of the family is from the area around plimoth plantation and that whole area and time period was one that was particularly interesting to me and the more you study it, the less like the images of the pilgrims, the mayflower, and thanksgiving you saw on tv and taught in school. it was a really hard time for these people, not just physically, being in a whole new area surrounded by scary forests, animals, and people (in their mind) while trapped in a setting that had the devil and witchcraft literally waiting to come get you and it caused a very paranoid mindset to take over in the way people lived and villages were governed.

that movie captured every bit of it and used language that was truly authentic for that time period. in fact they said at the end (i think) that much of the dialogue was taken directly from transcripts of the earliest witch trials.

this wasn't your average horror flick. this was one of the more intelligently written and filmed movies i have seen. the acting was great as well. i don't know that i have ever seen any of those actors in anything else, but i don't know that you could have asked for a better fitting ensemble than the one they had.

just a fantastic movie. not sure i want to watch it again, though.
