I'm also not quite ready to give up on Bene as a #2. I think he's the potential to be one of the best corners in franchise history. The kid is extremely football smart, and has all of the tools to be great.

I'd rather draft a solid nickle in the 3rd/4th. This of course has a lot to do with Josh Norman's decision.

Man, I truly hate having to agree with you. lol

If we resign Josh, Bene is a good compliment to him. We could keep Finnegan and McClain. It would be tough for any rookie to get much playing time. Hellz, it would cost us a good contract to find a vet to win a starting spot. IF we resign Josh.

If we lose Josh. Bene would be our #1, and going into the season with Finnegan and McClain isn't going to make any of us overly confident. So a rookie just may have to play. And we all know what you get with most rookies. Up and down play. But, if you get a good one, at least we have the team that could allow him to grow into the position.

IMO, we need to either resign Josh, or sign a decent vet. Even if we draft a CB.

In 6 mock drafts I just did at the fanspeak site, I wasn't very impressed with the CBs that might be available for us to draft at our position.  In only 1 of the 6 drafts was there ever a CB available that I could justify as BPA.   A lot of the CBs that might have fallen to us are very short, (e,g, Cyrus Jones, Jonathan Jones).  Don't seem like a good fit.  Makes me think a free agent CB could be a priority.

The one CB who seemed like he could fall to us, and did interest me somewhat was 6'1"   In one mock I was able to get him in the 4th.

CB DEIONDRE' HALL, NORTHERN IOWA (He's listed as a safety on some sites, and a CB on others)

Good call on Gman not being to thrilled with those shorter DBs. Although, I would add that if he sees talent, I ain't to sure he would totally pass on one.

I would also add that there are a lot of folks who are still not sure how Gman truly feels about the DBs to begin with. Sure, we all know he loves him some Hog Mollies. We still have no clue how he truly feels about filling in that back end. We have had some good defense lately without really having a ton of talent. Does he feel we don't need to worry about it, or will he actually address the situation?

If we resign Josh, we could probably make it through with Bene, Finnegan, and McClain. But if we lose Josh, we, IMO, really need to address the CB position. Hopefully with a decent vet. Cuz rooks are not gonna make a splash on this team.

We have some money. How he spends it will give us some insight into his philosophy on the DB position.

Or at least that is what I think I think anywho.

Alexander is a very good player, but I'm going with Jonathan Jones in guessing that Gettleman won't draft a 5'10" corner in the first.

Alexander will likely be a first round pick and have a good NFL career, but Gettleman places a premium and size and prioritizes the pass rush over the defensive backfield - so though it would fill a need, it just doesn't seem to match our profile.

My guess is DE, OT, WR, or Ezekiel Elliot in the first.  If Elliot is there I think it takes Gettleman a few nanoseconds to make the pick.  And I wouldn't write off a DT if another Kawann Short is on the board.

I think you're probably correct in all of the above.  Elliot does look like he'd be a Getts type of guy... In several of the mocks that I did yesterday, he fell far enough for us to get in the 1st round.  I guess it's that thing that most teams don't value RBs or want to use a 1st for a RB.

Also, in at least one of the mock drafts I played with yesterday there was a DT available, who upon reading his profile made me think, "Oh Dave's gonna be salivating over this guy... sounds just like KK"... only to read a few lines further in the profile and the "NFL player comparison" - the player he was compared to was KK.

The player in question is Hassan Ridgeway from Texas

About all that I'd disagree with in what you wrote is whether we'd go for a WR in the 1st.  I really can't see it.  There are some good WRs that look like they could be had in later rounds if we really need WR depth (Pharaoh Cooper, Charone Peake). In fact in several of my mocks, in rounds 3 - 5 WRs were cluttering up the board..., with several looking decent.

I think the DE & CB talent is going to go very quickly, so I'd say our most likely picks in round 1 (assuming BPA & need match up) are DE or CB, or possible RB (Elliot) or TE (Hunter Henry).

I'm not very optimistic in finding a good OT through the draft.  I didn't see much on the boards for us in the mocks I did.  Hopefully Gettleman sees some hidden gem I missed.

Gettleman will take his highest rated player when we are on the clock.

This is why I stopped getting into the draft once we found a competent GM. He ranks these guys and sees how the draft works its self out and then takes whoever is left on his list, and it works.

the 5th ranked DE in the draft could be available and if Dave has his #1 player available that happens to be a CB, he's going corner.

THIS, please pin this and end thread
