Classifieds were a huge revenue producer for local papers. Now that listing items online is more effective  that revenue stream has all but dried up. This was according to an acquaintance who worked for the Observer a while back.

Oh gotcha, I thought you meant sports journalism specifically.

What the papers will pay for talent isn't what it used to be and quality sports journalists were the first to go.

This was echoed by a friend who worked for the Louisville Courrier-Journal. Staff has been slashed in the past 10 years.

A Friend of mine is an Sports Writer... Actually went to College, got a Degree, Really Knowledgeable in sports. He told me the biggest thing that killed Sports Writers is Bloggers.. who will write for numerous news papers and may not necessarily have a degree or knows about sports for cheap... it is just cheaper for the newspapers to sub contract and slash staff. It is sad really. He still writes part time.. but also has a full time job because working as a sports writer doesn't pay enough and you get pennies for articles.

I suppose it is a lot of things combined. My friend was an editor for the Louisville paper. I can't remember if she said they have no editors or very few now and only for the select local features. That is why the writing is awful. As much as I like following Voth (though its gone down hill) he too just provides lists of bullet points for the most part and aggregates other sources . Every one is a blogger/smart phone photographer/editor and aren't very good at any of it and don't need to be. Just say something inflammatory and tweet a lot and if you get traffic you have a job.
