On what planet should Witten be ranked ahead of Olsen? Olsen's 2015 would be Witten's second best year ever. He hasn't had a year even close to that since 2012. When I saw the ranking, I racked my brain trying to thick who would have been number 2. Witten didn't even cross my mind.

NEXT UP...... it's the DTs.   KK has got to be very highly ranked...  Star is probably quite under appreciated.  We'll see.

Top 40 DTs:  http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2621292-br-nfl-1000-ranking-the-top-40-defensive-tackles-from-2015

Yup, as I thought.  Star is NOT RANKED.

KK is ranked #4

4. Kawann Short, Carolina Panthers

4. Kawann Short, Carolina Panthers

Bob Donnan-USA TODAY Sports

Pass Rush

51/55

A gifted pass-rusher, Kawann Short has a quick first step that he can easily convert to power. He possesses an eclectic set of pass-rush moves, which range from an overpowering bull rush to a swift, agile spin move. 2015 was a breakout year for Short, as he finished with a career-high 11 sacks and was constantly in the backfield, piling up 54 quarterback hurries.

When Short isn’t able to get to the quarterback, he makes himself a factor in the short-passing game by reading the quarterback’s eyes and getting his hands up to bat down balls at the line of scrimmage.

Run Defense

30/35

Short’s size (6’3”, 315 lbs) and athletic ability also make him a force in the running game. He is able to stay low after firing out of his stance and play with great leverage. He holds his ground while the play develops then tosses his foe aside to make the tackle. Short is also able to disrupt the play in the backfield by overwhelming guards with his bull rush and driving them back into the rushing lanes.

Position Value

9/9

Overall

90/99

#3  Geno Atkins
#2 Ndamukong Suh   (REALLY?!?!  for 2015???  No way)

For 2014Star was #17, KK was #7,  so this is a HUGE drop for Star to drop entirely out of the Top 40.  Personally I think Star's play was much better than the stats show, and much of what he did set up KK to have a monster year.

Listed the centers today

7. Ryan Kalil, Carolina Panthers

7. Ryan Kalil, Carolina Panthers

Pass Protection

39/45

Despite question marks along the Carolina Panthers offensive line in recent years, the center position hasn't been an issue. Ryan Kalil has been exceptional, as he was in 2015.

Kalil is smooth in his sets, creating space to work vertically or right and left along the line of scrimmage. He shows the ability to always get half-man leverage against anyone he is working against and his base allows him to keep the even weight distribution, balance and body control needed to recover and regain position when moved off his spot.

Kalil is always active in looking for work when uncovered but at times does drift a little too much, making it difficult for him to work back against any late pressure.

Run Blocking

40/45

Kalil is well-rounded as a run-blocker, possessing the sound technique and brute strength to execute blocks necessary for any scheme. He plays with square power and leverage through his base, allowing him to consistently get movement at the point of attack and sustain and strain to power through stalemates.

Kalil has the footwork and hand placement needed to reach and keep head-up and shaded nose tackles flat down the line of scrimmage, slowly working to hook them and cut off the backside. He also shows he can dig out nose tackles who are inside shade of the play-side guard.

Still, there are times Kalil buries his head and defenders work back late across his face to impact the play.

Position Value

7/7

Overall

86/97

Think that's kind of bogus that Kalil is only 7th.  He should be 3rd at worst.

6. Alex Mack - Now with the Falcons

5. Rodney Hudson

4. Mitch Morse, Kansas City Chiefs

3. Eric Wood, Buffalo Bills

2. Travis Frederick, Dallas Cowboys

1. Weston Richburg, New York Giants

Thanks for posting this.  Yeah, I thought Kalil would be top 5 for sure.

I also saw that B/R posted rankings for 3-4 DEs.  I didn't post that since it's N/A for our defense.  But here's the link should anyone be interested:

#3:  Mike Daniels, Green Bay

#2: Fletcher Cox, Philly

and #1  (no surprise.....) JJ Watt of Houston

AND, here we go.  Time for INSIDE LINEBACKERS.  If Luke is not #1 I may boycott B/R forever.

Ok.  Fortunately B/R has Luke ranked where he should be.  #1

1. Luke Kuechly, Carolina Panthers

1. Luke Kuechly, Carolina Panthers

Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

Pass Rush

6/10

A do-it-all linebacker in the middle of the field, Luke Kuechly (6’3”, 238 lbs) continues to dominate. He’s not a classic pass-rusher, but he does get after quarterbacks while shooting A-gaps or working as a spy against running passers. On the year, Kuechly recorded one sack, three quarterback hits and 11 hurries.

Run Defense

30/30

Kuechly isn’t the 250-pound run-stuffer many think of, but he’s able to shut down rushing lanes with unreal instincts and timing. He routinely beats running backs to the hole. Playing behind a big, smart defensive line, he’s able to keep his jersey clean from blockers with their help and his own ability to get skinny and knife through traffic.

Coverage

20/20

Many things add up to make Kuechly the best inside linebacker in football, but it’s in his coverage ability that he truly shines. He has the agility of a safety, and he uses that to run with tight ends in man coverage or to get depth in zone coverage. From his perch in the middle of the field, he’s able to read and react at an elite level and has the closing speed to make a play on the ball in the air.

Tackling

30/30
Even as Kuechly missed three games due to a concussion, he still amassed 97 solo tackles and missed just six attempts during the regular season. He may not lay the wood on every tackle attempt, but he is a heat-seeking missile when tracking down ball-carriers.

Position Value

9/9

Overall

95/99

#2 is Jerell Freeman  - Colts

#3 Danny Trevathan  -  Broncos (now signed elsewhere, Bears? IIRC)

#4 Brandon Marshall - Broncos

#5 CJ Mosley - Ravens

If I'm giving Stewart 19/25 for speed, I'm sure as hell giving him more than 20/25 power.  The dude is a horse.  23/25 at the very least, but I'd go higher myself.

Cam would be 25/25 in strength.

someone please make a gif of that play rushing for a first down with 8 guys riding on his back.

I think Luke will get more pass-rushing situations as Shaq grows within the system...imo, Shaq paired with Luke's coverage skills were a strong factor on why TD had 6-sacks.

Here's a YouTube

I imagine there is a GIF posted here - MurkN posted weekly GIFs from every game, I think including our Week 16 loss, but I'm not 100% positive.  Will see if I can find it.

Ok, so... to catch up.

Center was already posted previously.  Kalil was #7  (Much too low.... He should be in the top 5.)

RT.  I'm guessing Remmers might not be ranked in the top 35, though that's hard to imagine.  But hey, this IS B/R we're talking about....  Let's see if I'm correct.

Oh goodness.  Byron Bell is ranked at #25.  If Remmers is not ranked above Bell, we have a BIG BIG problem.  We shall see...

OK. My pessimism re: Remmers and B/R was unjustified.  Remmers comes in at #16.  That might actually be fairly accurate.

Pass Protection

30/45

Mike Remmers plays with some explosion in pass protection, but he also has a tendency to be overly inconsistent.

He plays with an explosive vertical set, maintaining even weight distribution to get to his spot and settle his feet. With patience, he's then able to drop his hips to anchor versus the bull rush and build his house. In doing so, he's often on target with his initial punch.

Remmers is at his best when he can aggressively jump-set and maul tight edge-rushers on the line, but he shows average overall footwork when needing to expand his set points out versus elite speed. Inconsistent set points lead to his hand usage being erratic, and he's often late with his hands altogether and off target with his punch. All of this makes him susceptible to hand swipes and dip-and-rip techniques, which was evident in Super Bowl 50.

Run Blocking

38/45

Though he has some shortcomings in pass protection, Remmers gets after it in the run game. He quickly gets off the ball to engage and knock defenders back and plays with a powerful base, which allows him to get push at the point of attack.

Remmers is able to reach defenders and gain the hand placement needed to work his hips around to seal but is better suited to take defenders down the middle to angle-drive block. He also shows the fight to sustain and strain to power through stalemates, although there are times he gets thrown off blocks when his pads rise up.

Position Value

7/7

Overall

75/97

Top 3 are:

#3 Marcus Gilbert - Pittsburgh

#2 Lane Johnson - Eagles

#1 Mitchell Schwartz - Cleveland

NOTE:  Remmers was not ranked in 2014, nor were any of the RTs who played for the Panthers in 2015, so Remmers being at #16 in 2015 is a big improvement.  Odd to see 49ers Jonathan Martin ranked at #35 in 2014 listed as a Panther.  But of course, in June of 2015, he was, having been signed by the team in free agency before deciding to retire.
