Potentially important or not bonus reason to signing him...we play the AFC West next year. Who would know them better than a former All-Pro defensive player from the Chargers?

Good point.  Playing against his old team will be a joy for him too.  The Raiders are interested in this experience in AFCW as well.  If he is chasing money guessing he goes there.  For the ring, he either comes to us or to the Steelers.  The Steelers are doing their best to free up cap space by converting salaries to bonuses.  They appear to be in the same boat as us so this gives you an idea of our choices too.  Here's their situation being closer to the Cap.

the team will have roughly $10 million in cap space once the cap ceiling reaches the $150-million range for the new league year. But that's before re-signing any role player free agents (William Gay among them). I'm told the Steelers will be up against the cap once again -- meaning, not much room or money to take big swings in the corner/safety market

Also, just some quick info if interested.  Weddle played in 13 games last year with 769 snaps.  Using PFF grade of 77.9; He performed at 88% of the top free agent FS Eric Berry, who scored 88.  He had a cap number of 10,100,000 so he made 13,134 per snap even though that's not how it works, but going by that, he made more than most people in just one defensive drive.  Do you really need to chase more money when you've already made 40 million.  Winning a superbowl may be more lucrative long term and enjoyable when you are 31.

What is wrong with letting Tre Boston have another year of development?  You have to think of it is a great benefit to him.  To be able to play under great veteran leadership and learn cannot be underestimated.  He has two years left on his contract so if Weedle is signed for two years then you have time to see if Tre is now the guy and reward him as so.

This is just ridiculous. Weddle was 1st team all pro last year, meaning the best at his position in the league.

This would be a huge get for us, Weddle is really good. You don't worry about how your 4th round 3rd year special teams player can fit in if you're a couple of pieces away from a championship.

Yea people showing they don't watch the NFL in this poo...LOL Harper anywhere near Weddle...hilarious.

Then others flat out admitting they dont' follow the NFL by saying poo like they only seen him in the Dante Rosario game....yea where is Rosario Dawson at these days? Meanwhile Weddle continues to be one of the top safeties in the league.

Weddle would be a fantastic pickup, not even a question.

Him and Tre Boston starting at safety would instantly upgrade the back of our defense into a force as strong as the front- okay that's hyperbole. But it would shore up one of the three things we need to address on defense:

A DE, a SS, and another CB, in that order of priority.

Eric Weddle is not a good play to build the team long term.

If Boston is not starting at safety in 2016, and Gettleman targets another safety to move ahead of him in free agency and the draft, then that is Gettleman announcing he screwed up another draft pick just like Kugbila, AJ Klein, Tyler Gaffney, Kenjon Barner and now Tre Boston. 5 of 11 picks over 2 years flaming out within 2 to 3 years.

I would not be surprised if David Mayo and Cameron Artis Payne are on this list in a year.

When used up and crusty vets like Fozzy Whitaker, Mike Remmers, Roman Harper, Kurt Coleman, Thomas DeCoud, and Chris Scott are better options the front office has a problem. Then you go out and draft a player to replace a player you drafted the previous season? That speaks volumes.

The Panthers just keep throwing away draft picks. Let's hope the young players drafted/traded for from 2011/2012 and the old vets back from 2005 and on can keep playing to carry the udfas and burned out vets they fill the roster with each year.

The Panthers depth is weak. The playoffs and Atlanta game clearly showed that to us all.

dude....get off the internet

I hope for your sake that you only do this to get attention and you don't think this sounds intelligent.

I'd rather go CB in free agency. I don't feel uncomfortable giving Boston a year in the role. Obviously you want quality depth to push the starters though. Pick up a DE and another WR in the draft's early rounds. Positions are deep and we could use help at DE and another quality option at WR.

Seriously the Harper to Weddle upgrade would be unbelievable. I really like what Harper did for us, he wasn't a problem in his tenure here. But this would be going from an average player to a playmaker. Imagine what having two playmakers in the secondary would do for this team, which was already amazing at taking the ball away,

Not all of your playmakers/stars can be in their 20s, and Weddle is a safety that doesn't really a ton on athleticism. I really hope we sign him, it would take our defense from damn good to historically great imo.

    • We could easily pick apart yesterday’s game: dropped passes, blown coverages, bad tackling and red zone issues to name a few. But it was clear that this wasn’t the same team from earlier in the season. They fought back and hung with the champs until the end. That’s what I was excited to see and it gives me hope that we’re on the right track.
    • I think BY played well today and exceeded expectations. I will temper future expectations as he has to string together many games of consistent quality. One game doesn’t convince me that he is a franchise QB or even a guy you want to stick with for another season. One game doesn’t erase all the negative play and limitations from the past couple of years. I hope he balls out and continues to get better but for me the verdict is still out   That said, I think he gave the team and fans hope yesterday which is a lot more than what we had when we woke up Sunday morning.
    • He was vastly improved today and we need to see more of Bryce the rest of the season to continue evaluate him in order to decide what the heck to do with him at the end of the season. He must play at least like this and improve more from here the rest of the season in order for me to keep him. No more 123 yard passing games and want to see at least this output weekly from him. If this is Bruce improving slowly over time then Canales is even better with developing QB's than I thought he was but still too early to tell and we need to see him the rest of the way as he has at very least earned back the starting gig moving forward.
