Let's talk about Ted Ginn Jr.

I think Ginn is in trouble for the mere fact that if we stay healthy, he'll go from being the Sept '15 number one to Sept '16 number four. Philly Brown's drops were mostly a preseason problem and, in my opinion, he's a great route-runner - he just knows how to get open. Funchess will head into the season with almost the same on-field experience as Kelvin. No matter how those guys end up the season next year in terms of top three receivers, I don't know how Ginn could crack the top three.

Additionally, Ginn is just not the punt returner he once was. So I could easily see us signing or drafting someone to compete with the top three guys at receiver and also return punts. (Travis Benjamin? Pie in the sky, but we're just spitballing here.)

I also like Travis Benjamin from the Browns, I mentioned him in another post. He's young, fast, and ready to prove himself. He's coming off a rookie contract, and almost got 1000 yards in Cleveland!  4.36 40, 14.7 YPC, the kids a younger Ginn or a better Philly.

I assume that's by yards?

Very misleading statistic for the 2015 Panthers.  We got so many short fields because of our takeaways.  I think I am correct in remembering that we led the league in terms of # of drives started in opponents territory.

Also, we throw the ball less than any other team, having the highest % of rushing plays.

We DID lead the league in TDs per game, and were 3rd in passing TDs per game

http://www.sportingcharts.com/nfl/stats/team-passing-touchdowns-per-game/2015/

We were 3rd in Net Yards Pass efficiency

http://www.sportingcharts.com/nfl/stats/pass-efficiency-ratio/2015/

Doesn't sound to me like we had any big problem with our passing game in 2015.  Just have to know what metric to use to measure it accurately.  In 2015 given so many short fields, passing yards didn't really matter.  Scoring did.

Our starting field position is not that much better than the Cardinals and they had a top passing offense. Same with the Patriots. And I also understand that we run more than we pass. But the reason why we run more than we pass might be because of our WRs. BTW, I am not saying that there is anything wrong with running more than passing in the NFL.

However, there is nothing wrong with wanting a better, more dynamic passing game.

Would I personally sign Jeffery over tagging Norman? No. Would I sacrifice our running game or run defense for an expensive WR FA? No. Would I pass on the draft's best DE or CB for the draft's 4th best WR? No. But this is not a zero-sum game. You can get better passing while maintaining other areas of your team.

But it is okay to go into a season better than a 2nd year RAW, ACL KB and RAW Funchess.

I personally would add either AJ Johnson or Boldin, cut Cotch, and then spend a 3rd on WR/TE/a pass catching RB.

i just wanted to point out that this notion that anyone who suggests that maybe our WR unit could use some talent getting laughed at is ridiculous. It is not crazy to think our WR core/Newton/the Panthers could use a Jeffery is not crazy. Of course, a "big" FA WR addition should be reasonable.

I think Ginn stays. We can talk about who we might get from FA but the fact is the WR core we had this season provided just about all we could ask for. Add in KB and we improve nearly automatically. I just don't see DG going shopping for a WR when other positions are in greater need of offseason help.

No.

Ginn will be back. Personally i dont think we need Alshon..

Benjamin, Olsen, Ginn, Funchess and Brown..

We good..

And what happens when we lose KB or Funchess, or god forbid, Olsen? NFL is a long year. You need to be prepared for the reality of injuries. We got away with our lackluster WR corps all year until the SB, and then it bit us badly. We need to have some depth at the position in case one of the big names goes down.

Absolutely go get Alshon if his contract is reasonable.

You can't teach speed. Do we really want to go back to when someone like Cotchery did run arounds and deep routes? The only other answer on the roster I can think of is Stephen Hill and he may actually have worse hands.

Ginn is the only true speed option we have (Philly falls a tad short). Why get rid of him unless we somehow find a replacement that we're certain can be just as effective?

So we ignore getting a potential superstar at WR because you think we're set?

Can you imagine if we had Alshon, KB, and Funchess all locked up long term? You wouldn't have to look for WR for 4-5 years.

I already know what Ginn, Olsen, Brown and Funchess can do..why you so set on getting someone else when we just went to the Superbowl with those players..not the playoffs..but the SUPERBOWL..throw in Benjamin like I said two posts ago we win it..

You don't even know if Alshon is a good locker room fit..mess that up and you can kiss the season good bye..

KB, Funchess, Brown, and Ginn seem to give us a very solid rotation at receiver.  The question regarding injuries is a valid one, but we have to think of the possibility of injuries at other positions as well.   Wide receiver is no more important than any other position on the field, and perhaps less important than some (such as defensive and offensive line).  So the question is not whether we are set.  The question as with any other position/player is cost vs benefit.  Is the price a potential superstar would demand worth tying up so much of our salary cap?  Or would we be better off sticking with what we have and who we have returning from injury, and focusing on improving other areas.

Where exactly do you think the money to sign Alshon Jeffrey is going to come from? You want to let Norman go? Not sign one of Short or Star? Cut Kalil? Fill out the roster with UDFAs? Jeffrey is going to get $14M/year. That ain't in the budget,

Not to mention that Chicago will tag him before letting him hit free agency.
