Let's talk about Ted Ginn Jr.

Every single receiver we have outside of KB is someone that can be, and frankly NEEDS to be, improved upon. Ginn is fast and drops 50% of the critical deep passes coming his way. Philly is a DECENT receiver and a jack of all trades but not spectacular in any way. I look for him to be our new Cotchery. Funchess was a rookie and I still think the book is out on him and he needs more time to develop. I think you either add Jeffery in free agency or you go after a talented draft pick at some point in the first two days to continue shoring up the deficiency at WR. No need to go crazy but we do need better. Honestly, I'd rather have experience over another rookie but I'll take whatever I can get at this point.

This free agency period and the draft should be fun. We don't need much but we need just a little bit of everything. an extra pass rusher, a backup on the interior d-line, couple of guys in the secondary, WR, more depth along the oline, possibly a RB if a good one falls to us or loses momentum in the free agency market. lots of little needs but none of the GLARING HOLES large enough to drive a semi through like we have had in years past.

Funch will be #2. He was essentially our #2 this year looking at Stats - comparable yards with Philly and Cotch but more TDs. Another camp will do him wonders. He can focus on a particular position with the confidence and understanding that 1 year in the league will have given him. He is by default going to be better in year 2, which necessarily means that our #2 WR spot gets better. Combine that with KB presumably coming back strong and Ginn dropping to #3 WR, #1,#2,and #3 spots all improve over last year.

Adding Alshon doesn't follow this teams philosophy on how to be a super bowl team. Our offense doesn't really need a big signing WR. We are aleady good enough in that area. Improving on the OL and pass rush would have made a big difference in the super bowl. Goes back to what Gettleman says "defense wins championships, offense scores points". This was proven in the superbowl.

Yeah our offense did pretty well in the Superbowl.

Ginn and Brown are #4/5 Wrs so "We good" until someone gets hurt...

That's why we need to bring in a real #2 or #3 if we dont' feel Funchess is a true #2.

Ginn and Brown are bottom of the barrel/roster WRs Ginn had 10TDs cool so did Cotchery before...but he's not a 10TD EVERY year guy like Benji....need more top of the depth help at WR.

We went to the Superbowl with Ginn, Funchess, Olsen and Brown..and lost ..

Add in Benjamin we win it..

Yes, on paper. But KB will have some rust to shakeoff and his "sophomore slump" potential still exists. You are also 1 injury away from being right back to the same blah wr depth chart we had this season. Id rather we stack the odds more in our favor and be better prepared to handle injuries and worst case scenarios than hoping Bersin can come in and Ginn is our biggest weapon.

Gettleman has shown repeatedly throughout his tenure with us that he's more than willing to jettison players who aren't doing their jobs. Gettleman doesn't care much for things like feelings and sentimentality, or if he does he doesn't let it get in the way of running a football operation. Anytime a player's underperformed in some way that cripples the team, and that player is easily replaceable, Gettleman has been willing to let him go.

What does this say about Ted Ginn?

In a lot of ways I think Ginn is a fan favorite. He was actually one of my favorite players last year, because despite his drops he was a big play kind of guy and gave us that over-the-top threat we'd been missing from the year before. For every overtime drop against the Colts you had a clutch 60-yard touchdown on a third down crossing pattern, and it was the clutch 60 yard touchdown I think most of us remembered.

But I can't help but think Gettleman also sees the drops. They cost us in the big game. Even if we tag Norman, Gettleman will have enough cap space to do some damage in free agency. If he views wide receiver as a position that needs to be upgraded (it's actually possible Kelvin Benjamin doesn't return to his rookie form) and goes after someone like Alshon Jeffrey, then suddenly a guy like Ginn becomes expendable.

Should Ginn be worried?

Ginn was signed to solidify our return game, which he succeeded at.  Him as No. 1 WR was never the plan, so he exceeded any expectations in that department.  If anything, and I'm not saying this will happen because Ginn seems like a good character guy, He should hold out for more money for what he did this season.

Ginn was brought in as a solution to our problem with fielding punts. He was never expected to be the main guy catching passes. I absolutely think he stays

Rivera specifically said Ginn was brought in to "blow the top off" defenses. I am sure fielding punts was another reason, but I get the impression the deep threat was reason numero uno.
