You should of put his name in the title and your thread would receive more press. Rookie mistake.

There should be a bit more attention for reasons beyond that as well:

The guy is not only a terrific Punter but an excellent FG kicker. You may be seeing the Panthers on front line of what has always been the inevitable progression of the "Kicking Specialist" position (that'll be the title of that position in the future as well, mark it down)

Imagine having an extra roster spot because you've got a guy who can do both.

I have no idea why more people haven't tried to excel at both. I get that it's hard to do at an NFL level, but I bet it's literally worth millions. Teams will covet that extra roster spot more than a few $.

Also:

Quote

Swayze attended Jackson Prep in Jackson, Mississippi, where he played kicker, wide receiver and punter. He was his team's leading receiver for three years. He was named all-state selection his senior year. His senior year, he was voted team Most Valuable Player. That year, he had 35 catches, 813 yards and 10 touchdowns and 14 field goals. He also participated in baseball and track.

Nortman is a free agent right now. This is definitely insurance in case he goes elsewhere and a shot across the bow that we aren't going to pay him a premium just because we have no other options. It's a great move that creates leverage for any contract negotiations with Nortman. We can now say, "If you want to stay then you are staying at our price. If not then we already signed your replacement. Best of luck in free agency."

Plus, Nortman's stats are rather unimpressive this season. He is in the bottom half of the league in a majority of them. I think he will only be offered something just slightly above the vet min. or perhaps Gettles is already planning to move on from him.

Whenever Vinatari retires the Colts are going to this very thing with Pat McAffee, read up on it, he has been a great place kicker for a while now.

2 year vet minimum with a $1M signing bonus is along the lines of what I was thinking for him.

Sounds very tempting to have 1 guy do both.... VERY tempting.

But, then if he's injured, you've got to have an emergency kicker for both roles.  Might not be so easy...

Also, I would think leg fatigue could be an issue.  I remember reading in preseason about how our coaches were being pretty careful in monitoring Nortman's punt count so as to keep his leg fresh, since much of camp we didn't have a 2nd punter.

The level of screwed you would be if your K/P went down early in a game is unmeasurable. The K is your emergency P and the P is your emergency K. Lose both at the same time and you might as well pack it up and go home early.

That's certainly how it seems to me too...

Maybe we can teach Joe Webb to kick.  QB, RB, WR, ST specialist, K/P .... the do it all player / emergency backup for every position,  LOL!!!  :-)

Qb is the same way though. Having one kicker is definitely a good idea, how often do they get hurt? It's so rare you can really just go for every 2 point conversion if it happens. There's always one guy on the team that can punt if you have no other option (Tom Brady type). It's definitely something worth trying out considering you get an extra roster spot for free.

nailed it. this is a primo gettles move. nortman is actually one of the better punters in the league, and if swayze is kickin ass on tape then all of a sudden we have the leverage to tell nortman he's not THAT great and shave some more off of whatever potential contract he signs, money that could get shuffled to a pro bowl right tackle or a fine ass defensive end or, say, alshon jeffrey
