Pretty sure Stewart's not going anywhere this year unless a GREAT opportunity falls in our laps... Yes, a lot of us have some concerns about his durability, but I think he's low on the cut list.

I agree.  I think he was healthy "enough" to keep him here.  He may have even played in those games he missed (at least a couple) if we weren't in such a good position with our record, I'm not sure.  He played more games than I ever thought he would this year.

No to a 31 year old safety who wants top tier money

Eric Berry would be sick but I realize there is almost zero chance of that.

If we are interested in Weddle at all, we just have to hope that the pool of competitors is limited to contending teams with cap-room. Honestly not sure how many contenders have cap room and are need of a safety.

Cutting Harper and Cotchery is actually $1.5 mil more expensive than keeping them on the roster.  With their pending releases, we are $17.365 mil under the CAP.  We are not currently $30 mil under the cap, like some are posting.

Question:  does this include the projected increase in the cap for 2016?  Maybe that's why the figures are different at different sites?

(I'm not a cap or contract expert, so i have no clue one way or the other when it comes to this.)

Re: people saying we need a sure-hands possession receiver to replace Cotchery and/or a vet to mentor younger guys.  I'm not so sure.  Don't hate me, but could Bersin be that guy?  He has a reputation as a good mentor for rookies, even though he himself is young.  He's mastered the playbook, can plug & play all 3 WR positions, and he's got very good hands.   I assume we resign him at least through training camp and see if he makes the cut.  I doubt he's in high demand anywhere else, and he has some real value for us as depth / possible WR #5.

Ok so if we were so ready to set them free, why did we keep Harper starting the whole year even in the playoffs and Super Bowl?

Because he gave us the best chance to win.  We was at a win now mode.  Boston has improved and can take over next year.

Overthecap has a base salary cap projection of $150M

Spotrac has a base salary cap projection of $154M

Both sites have already included ~$3.4M in salary cap rollover from 2015 for the Panthers in their 2016 projections.

Overthecap has not yet accounted for the Harper and Cotchery contracts voiding while Spotrac has. If you "cut" Harper and Cotchery on Overthecap's calculator then you get $17M in cap space in 2016 for the Panthers while Spotrac shows $21M. A difference of $4M which is the same difference in their base salary cap projections.

The actual 2016 salary cap should really be around $155M so Spotrac's numbers are more correct currently though I still use Overthecap because I find it to be much more user friendly then I just add in the additional ~$5M in my head when using the calculator.

No hard number on the cap. But last report was between 151 and 155 in December.
