Bill Voth: "Panthers Are Allowing Cam To Look Like A Baby."

There is a difference between insulting someone and giving constructive criticism---respectfully discussing an opinion, and backing it up, than gratuitous name calling and insinuation about one's life, character and integrity. That is what Nolan Nawrocki basically did to Cam Newton before he could even get in the pros.  That is disrespectful. If you are trying to tell me that every member of the media has disrespected Cam, I will tell you that's undeniably untrue.

As a professional football player in the NFL, like it or not, part of your job is to interact with the media with a certain amount of social decorum and professional interaction. This interaction (fortunately, or unfortunately, depending on one's perspective) is a big part of the reason why the popularity of the NFL has increased exponentially over the years. Media interaction comes with the territory, and sometimes everything said is not going to be agreeable to the player or anyone else. But that's to be expected. It's part of the job. Not only Cam, but any player is held to that standard. Needless to say, being called a "slob" or any other such unfounded and unnecessary foolishness goes not only beyond that standard, but also the standard of the Huddle (supposedly).

If that's the standard, then the press need to hold themselves to that as well.

The "pouting", "immaturity", and "baby" comments are not constructive criticism, they are lazy remarks that further an even lazier narrative that only make it easier for these "journalists" to write lazy gossip pieces, and spout off on the radio for who knows how long just to get their name out there even more.

Don't sit here, and put them on a pedestal. Few of these journalists actually give a poo about athletes when it comes down to it. They see them as a means to further their own careers, and if they have to ruin the reputation of an athlete just to get a juicy quote, the will do it in a second, and not think twice about it.

Why is it that Cam is automatically the bad guy here and the media at-large are automatically the good guys anyway?

They (generally, not all of them, but a lot of them) created an environment where Cam probably doesn't trust them, probably doesn't care for them, and probably doesn't care whether he makes their lives any easier or not.  In more easy to understand terms...if your neighbor's dog bites your hand enough times you're going to stop trying to pet that dog right?

No Cam did not act in accordance with the cookie-cutter "this is how you act / speak / respond after losing no matter what you lost or how your lost it" template.  Nor did the media, who believe themselves to be somehow entitled to exactly what they want, handle not getting what they want very well.  If anything I believe the vitriolic stories and spoiled-brat, name-calling, nonsense directed at Cam after they didn't get what they wanted / expected are worse.  Side note?  I identify far more closely with Cam's actions, statements, and attitude than that of the stereotypical "good loser".  I think a lot of people feel this way too if they're honest with themselves (not everyone, but more than you'd think by reading comments on the subject)

As long as Cam fulfills his obligations as set out by the NFL in such a way that he's not fined then I don't care if he ever says another word to any of them.  If I were him I probably wouldn't.

Hell maybe the next time Voth asks him a question he should just start reading quotes out of Voth's old articles back to him regardless of what the question is.  At least it'd make people laugh.

All this negative media is fantastic, genuinely. As fun as the love in was in January it's like back to the good old days with the team/Cam getting slagged off left right and centre, nothing like more motivation for next season, not long before the media reports that what on earth is Gettleman doing not signing X or Y and that weve lost the free agency again

It's sad that one of our own with a voice that reaches many people can constantly find ways to throw our franchise player under the bus. Disgusting

He is not one of our own. He's a journalist from Cleveland. He is not a Panthers fan, and he's made that known on many occasions. He's a Browns fan.

Well, since Voth is a Browns fan..

I would be curious to hear how he feels about Johnny Manziel, since apparently Cam Newton is such a super villain in his mind.

Bill is faster to rip on the Browns than you are.

It's what Fans of bad franchises do. I know, I grew up in Tampa Bay in the 80s.

Well he should be on the radio right now ripping Johnny for showing up drunk to practice, being a shitty teammate, and just a shitty person in general to women, and everyone else.

But I suppose that just wouldn't get him the exposure he needs for his website compared to throwing out lazy, and played out cliched sound bites about Newton over the air waves.

I know you've gotta have his back, and all, but he needs a reality check.

Voth doesn't cover the Browns, but if the subject came up he would be the first to rip Manziel. But again, he covers the Panthers, not the Browns.

Yeah, that was established.

But it's a double standard within the industry.

He's upset that Newton had the nerve to not answer questions for himself, and his precious colleagues, so he's all up arms. But I haven't heard a damn thing out of him about another SEC quarterback who plays for his favorite team beating on women. What's more important here? He can take that "man up" bullshit, and shove it. When it boils down to it, he's concerned with himself only.

maybe i'm stupid or missing something here but it seems like all the calls for cam to "man up" or "act more mature" basically equate to "look good to the media".

the front office, coaching staff, his teammates, and the fans are sure as hell still behind him so i'm sort of lost as to what functional purpose reciting "mature" canned responses in a suit at a postgame presser accomplishes other than that.

And the young man has hit the bullseye and wins the Kewpie doll for his pretty lady!
