We need a DE... so whom?

We are not drafting DE early. It's a position that takes awhile to develop. If we get help it will be through FA.

I think we're so needy due to likely major turnover at DE (Alexander, Allen, CJ & Horton might all be gone) that we quite probably need to double up.  Splash FA signing to be the starter opposite Ealy, and draft for depth behind Addison & Delaire / future development.

Gettleman loves his DL so we will grab one, along with keeping a vet.

Actually funny enough for the ones chiming OL, DE's develop faster than OT's lately now.

2015  1st round OT's: Flowers, Peat, Ogbuehi, Humphries

2014 1st round OT's: Greg Robinson, Jake Matthews, Taylor Lewan (titans already looking to draft OT #1 so he wasn't the answer), Ju'Wan James

2013 Fisher, Joeckel, Lane Johnson, DJ Fluker, Justin Pugh

We will likely keep Johnson on a restructre deal, with Ealy starting as the RE.  Draft  a rookie DE and put in him in rotation. Likey canditate for  2 or 3 round is Nassib, he is similar to Joey Bosa

Carl Nassib | Penn State

6'-7" -273 lbs

PLAYER OVERVIEW

A self-starter, Nassib is a coach's dream with his work ethic, motivation and intelligence and he has the size and length that translates well to the next level. He plays with his hair on fire, but unless he competes with more control and strategy, he will have more negative than positive snaps against NFL competition. Although he needs more seasoning and likely won't start from day one, Nassib has the tools to compete for a NFL starting role by year two, fitting both even and odd fronts.

STRENGTHS: Tall, long athlete with a large wingspan. Has worked hard in the weight room to fill out his frame, adding 60 pounds since high school. Improved snap anticipation and often the first linemen off the ball.

Long strides to eat up grass in a hurry off the edge and in pursuit to chase down plays away from the line of scrimmage. Comfortable on his feet to pedal, stay balanced in reverse and cover space. Very good initial momentum to launch off the line and convert his speed to power when he extends his arms into blockers.

Try-hard hustler with a motor that never quits. Humble, spiritual and football is important to him. Lives in the weight room and the concept of hard work was instilled in him at a young age. Intense practice player with a team-first attitude.

Smart on the field and off - two-time Academic All-Big Ten and graduated in December 2015 with a 3.5 GPA and degree in biology (plans to attend medical school one day to be a doctor). Athletic bloodlines as his older brother (Ryan) was a quarterback at Syracuse and 2013 fourth round pick of the New York Giants.

Impressive senior season on tape and on the stat sheet, setting a new school record for sacks (despite playing only four combined snaps in the final two regular season games), including at least one sack in 10 straight games.

DEs don't grow on trees and this year's draft class is thin. We were lucky Ealy dropped to us.

Sigh....  People we pick 31st. It's like a second round pick in the first round.  DE is one of the most valuable position on the field. Unless we mortgage our future like hurney did we are not getting even a role player at DE.  OT is also something we will not get this year.

My early money is on Oliver Vernon and/or Kevin Dodd with the 30th pick.

Vernon is going to get a huge contract. By paying Vernon we'll have to lose one guy from our core group. Is Olivier Vernon worth losing a core guy for?

I initially laughed off the whole Mario Williams thing at first just because everyone likes to always connect the dots to a players hometown but the more I think about and check out the defensive end prospects the more I want Mario. Mario checked out last year but with Rex in charge I don't blame him, he had a great year in 2014 and at 31 still has a few years left. I say we go hard after Mario!

Mario Williams / Rodney McLeod / Trumaine Johnson

It'll be the Panthers cheaper version of the Broncos Ward / Ware / Talib trio since we already have Norman.

We can still grab a DE in the draft but there will be a lot less pressure to grab one early. This draft isn't very deep imo and DG may even trade up to get 1st round value ("rather have a dime than 2 nickles"). Either way that DE will need time, I think it'll be crucial to move on Mario quickly if Buffalo does release him.

I really wish Hardy wasn't such a knucklehead. The guy is exactly what this team needs as a player and for the most part it seems the coaches and players here loved him. I just don't see JR letting him come back. Maybe Gettleman could sell him on it being the difference between winning the Superbowl or not and it could possibly happen.

A motivated Hardy, Ealy, Short and Star is the best d-line in the NFL, add in our lb core, Norman, Bene, Coleman and Boston/Weddle and you have the best defense the NFL has seen in a long time. Too bad it won't happen.

I'm so confused.

I thought I read somewhere there are more Dlinemen than any other position in the draft, and the draft is stacked with good DEs.

Maybe I misunderstood.?  This is what i find hard about this time of year.  It's so hard to know who is speaking with any authority or has real info & insight re: the draft.

Seriously, I'd very much appreciate it if someone can recommend good sites to follow / twitter feeds.  I think someone recommended Joel Corry?

Is there a good "Draft Preview" article somewhere that someone would recommend?

    • Too late to edit above but the quote is from this Diane Russini article in the Athletic: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5941684/2024/11/23/russinis-what-im-hearing-the-day-the-jets-fell-apart-and-the-broncos-rallied-belichick-best-fits/ Okay.. there you have sorry I left that out the first post.  Also waivers keep the contract intact. That is the major difference in released and waived. It's all in that link from the other post.
    • Okay so I am reading something in The Athletic and it says that Jones had to pass through waivers. So I don't know. I looked this stuff up when we were number one there all offseason and I thought it said 4 years in the league got you vested, as they call it.  Vested gets you out of waivers as I understood it. I probably got something wrong, but when I think about the slack quality of journalism these days I wonder about that. So I went and looked, again. Well, well.  For everyone: "When a player has accrued at least four seasons in the NFL, they are considered a vested veteran. When these vested veterans get cut, they are released and their contract is terminated. When a vested veteran is released, they are an unrestricted free agent that can sign with any NFL team, and the team that released them doesn’t need to provide any additional compensation." It runs it all down here, where the quotes came from: https://www.profootballnetwork.com/waived-vs-released-nfl/ As far as Jones, the team turned down his 5th year option so I knew that meant he had 4 years in, because they re-signed him anyway, after turning down the much cheaper extra year.  The Athletic is owned by the New York Times so I shouldn't be surprised. That paper was an institution once upon a time but they let their standards go.
