Splash signing: Olivier Vernon or Bruce Irvin (unlikely IMO)

Under the radar / lesser signings: Akiem Hicks, George Selvie, or Jason Jones

Draft pick: Kevin Dodd, Noah Spence, Emmanuel Ogbah, Carl Nassib are prospects that may be available at pick 30 (in my order of preference today)

Would love Ogbah but he's likely going before the Panthers pick.

Why is Hardy even coming up in this coversation. There is absolutely ZERO chance that happens....this year, next year or ever. Don't know what it may take to convince some of this.

Hell must freeze over and the NFL would have to decide what a catch "really" is before people stop talking about bringing Hardy back.

Question, have we taken into account the salary cap increase for next season???

I figure with Allen and Johnson gone, we'll at least have 10 million to play around with. Granted, we still need to tag Norman and extend Short but what if we do the unexpected and NOT tag Norman and extend Short (wait until his final year)? I know it's hersey but it's possible the way Gettleman values a front seven.

Tough choices are coming regardless. The question is what is our beloved GM thinking at the moment?

early estimates, assuming Johnson is cut or restructured we can be between $38-$45M under the cap, this is assuming CJ gets cu/restructures

What do y'all think about Corey Wootten of the Detroit Lions?

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/players/historical/565129

There's his draft profile.

His current stats.

I remember him being talked up during the draft years ago.  He's had a fairly unspectacular career, but has some physical ability.  Not sure about his injury history other than he had a bunch in college.

This could be one of those under the radar kind of Gettlemand guys.

Wonder what they will do with Delaire. Get him in the weight room and add some muscle/lbs to his frame. Never know what D.G is thinking. Pretty frugal with the wallet. Maybe just draft and bring the two vets back on cheap deals and  develop Delaire.

Think we need more than that.

I'm pretty sure we can't just rely on the draft for DE.  Think we need a starter opposite Ealy.  If by any chance we do bring Allen or CJ back, I'd look at them in the rotation, not as starters.  No way we'll find a good enough starting DE in the draft.  At least with our coaches & scheme, it's taking 2 years to develop them fully.  Ealy is looking to be on track to start, certainly.

I'm going to assume that we double dip at DE in the draft.

That said, if we don't sign a FA vet, I really wouldn't mind seeing Allen come back on a team friendly deal to split time and show the new guys the ropes. Ealy indicated how big a role Allen has made in him; let him do it again for two newbies.

We are not drafting DE early. It's a position that takes awhile to develop. If we get help it will be through FA.

If one thing is for certain, with DG, you can't be certain about the draft but it's for the better.

    • Too late to edit above but the quote is from this Diane Russini article in the Athletic: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5941684/2024/11/23/russinis-what-im-hearing-the-day-the-jets-fell-apart-and-the-broncos-rallied-belichick-best-fits/ Okay.. there you have sorry I left that out the first post.  Also waivers keep the contract intact. That is the major difference in released and waived. It's all in that link from the other post.
    • Okay so I am reading something in The Athletic and it says that Jones had to pass through waivers. So I don't know. I looked this stuff up when we were number one there all offseason and I thought it said 4 years in the league got you vested, as they call it.  Vested gets you out of waivers as I understood it. I probably got something wrong, but when I think about the slack quality of journalism these days I wonder about that. So I went and looked, again. Well, well.  For everyone: "When a player has accrued at least four seasons in the NFL, they are considered a vested veteran. When these vested veterans get cut, they are released and their contract is terminated. When a vested veteran is released, they are an unrestricted free agent that can sign with any NFL team, and the team that released them doesn’t need to provide any additional compensation." It runs it all down here, where the quotes came from: https://www.profootballnetwork.com/waived-vs-released-nfl/ As far as Jones, the team turned down his 5th year option so I knew that meant he had 4 years in, because they re-signed him anyway, after turning down the much cheaper extra year.  The Athletic is owned by the New York Times so I shouldn't be surprised. That paper was an institution once upon a time but they let their standards go.
