This fan base is strange as hell.

I've never seen so many people who claim to be "fans" of the team that despise the face of the franchise so much. How can you be a fan of the Panthers, but hate Cam? I would like to know how that works?

I could understand if Cam was a scrub QB, but the guy is the MVP for a reason.

Those types of people need Jesus.

i've read enough bullshit from people just like what you described in the second sentence to kind of rough out a profile for them.

i think it's mostly based on this: there are some people who are just hopelessly in love with the concept of a scrappy, underestimated, and ultimately relatable guy like jake delhomme quarterbacking their favorite team.  a guy who has been overlooked time and again but is such a great story.  that's the "real" carolina panthers to them.  a quarterback like jake coached by a guy like john fox playing "tuff physical footbawl" aka winning games 16-13 or losing terribly but with oh so much heart.  matt moore is a good fit for this concept as well.  they're terrified of anybody paying any attention to the panthers because they've bought into the "under the radar" myth and they're willing to go 8-8 every year for all eternity so long as they've got their scrappy fiery gritty leader to root for.  they're willing to tolerate some star power at certain positions, of course.  but there is one spot where such a thing gives them diarrhea, which brings me to my next point-

the way the panthers are now is alien and strange to them.  explosive offense run by a chiseled rock star quarterback picked at the tippy top of the draft who wins serious national accolades in the form of league MVP and a first team all pro selection.  if there's a grocery list of things that are completely wrong for "their" panthers, that's it.  a guy who plays more like the widely loathed michael vick (except not really but you know what they really mean when they make that comparison) than a sloth-like "traditional" pocket passer who gets taken down by an unusually tall blade of grass.

cam newton will never be able to do anything right by these people.  he's keyed a culture change in this organization and no matter what any idiot says i don't think it would have happened if we took, say, christian ponder or jake locker in that draft or got cute trying to sign a cheap quarterback and "surround him with weapons" like josh mccown in tampa bay last season.  even if a team quarterbacked by cam brings a lombardi to charlotte there will always be some reason that he doesn't deserve any credit for it.

Those types of people want a white QB just as I suspected all along.

They should just go root for another team because Cam is going to be here for a long time.

Has anyone seriously gone on the Observer, our hometown paper, after the Panthers' win?

The place is a ghost town as far as people posting about that week's win.

The Panthers won 15 games in the regular season and for all the articles posted, there may have been 100 comments total for the season.

Most of the comments coming after the Atlanta loss.

You go on there no, and suddenly there is about 1000 comments. 85% of which is negative towards Newton.

I will say it again. There are some racists fan bases around the country, but at least they are always passionate about the local team. Philly is a prime example of this.

But no fan base quite does racism as Charlotte does. Literally can give two dicks about the Panthers when they are on an historic run...but come running out with negative BS as soon as there is a lost.

And people wonder why the Observer is willing to publish letters from angry mothers in TN about the star QB: the community in which the Panthers play practically roots against Newton.

/I just went to the Panthers facebook page and its 2014 all over again.

Off with Cam head. Our fanbase is just awful I'm sorry to say. Dont be surprise when Cam is a FA again that he bolts for the "North"..

The Bible belt is something else..

Yeah, we'll regret it, but that might be the best thing.

Some in Panther Nation don't know how good they have it.

i'm convinced that very few or none of them sat in half empty stadiums watching the likes of chris weinke and jimmy clausen

my first live panthers game was the 13-12 loss to the jets in 2001.  i have seen some shitty panthers football and what's going on now is a million times better than that.

when i moved to the triad in 2010, you couldn't find a panther fan anywhere if you tried.

Talk about cam and the team needing a humble pie, the fanbase and local media need it badly.

I honestly would have loved it if Cam trolled the NFL and the media even more. By saying something like, " Its easy to win when the refs cheat your opponent out of the game."

Although awesome, he'd never do that because he has way too much love and respect for the game and the people who are put in place to do these jobs. I remember when he snapped off at a ref and apologized during the game as well as publicly and I think it was over a call that he didn't get. Cam wouldn't do that because he's classless, so they say. That'd be awesome if he spent his offseason trolling the NFL.
