Free agency not the draft will be the key this off season

You do know the cap is increasing?

I'm not asking to break the bank, I'm just tired of the scraping at the bottom of the barrel. Ginn, Cotchery, Avant those guys are 4th string receivers.

the OP i was responding to wanted Alshon Jeffery

There's a huge gap between 4th string guys and Alshon- so it's possible we agree

We've gotten better every year since 2010, why do we suddenly NEED to all in and mortgage the future?

We don't and we won't. We will draft BPA, sign our core players, and fill needs from free agency. I'm excited because this Team has a bright future. The window is open to another SB and I don't see it closing soon.

Gettleman has inferred that this coming season is when he hoped to be in "win now" mode and done with the rebuild, so OP isn't far off. Not that I expect we'll vear wildly offcourse from the plan and culture that got us here of course.

We basically found out the type of team that can beat us in the playoffs, and how they'll try to do it next season. We're vulnerable to a team with an elite D-line, and DBs who can hold up in single coverage and allow the box to be loaded to stop our run.

We have to make moves to counter that from happening again next season. The two best ways to stop that are improving the o-line, and improving the WR corps. KB will improve the WR corps, but RT will have to be addressed. The pass blocking is just not good enough to face an elite d-line.

they were the first team to stop Olsen.  On the radio last week we had so many ways to beat you.  There was no way they could cover them all.  Give credit to the coaching staff.  We also need to do something because they just laid out the blueprint to be at Carolina.

its not about mortgaging the future, its about winning NOW.

Cam was the most hit QB this past season for all we know his SB window is shorter than everyone else's. We have to surround him with better talent now.

Yes, this is DG's first year with some dough to spend, but we have potential FAs in 2016, 17 and 18 that would rank near the top of their respective years as "top tier FAs".  Norman will get paid (franchise and eventually long-term) this year, and Short/Star in '17.  KB and Bene in '18 is not too far off as well.

This roster is set up for long-term success and it's due to being an amazing drafter and filling out the roster with hungry FAs.  We have the potential to be around the big dance for a good 4-5 years, so I think Gettleman will make some wise choices.

That being said, I think Gettleman will, like a few other posters have noted, add needs in FA.  We don't have many, and for some spots, the answer is literally on the roster. I think KB helps boost the WRs and Williams does the same at RT.  Not sold on Boston at S yet, but I wonder if he can be the answer.... this is a tough one because outside of DE, safety is our biggest glaring need.

I don't think we bring in one of the big names like Jeffrey, Vernon or Wilkerson. It's not DG's style, even though he's been cap-strapped, I don't think he goes for the high-priced talent.

I'd kick the tires on Weddle to see how much money he wants, and allows you to keep an eye on Boston as a potential replacement down the line.

At CB, I wonder if Getts would look back into the NYG talent pool and see about Amukamara (only 26). I'm actually okay with moving forward with Norman-Bene-McClain.  I think if McClain gets a full offseason of workouts and absorbing more film and getting more comfortable in our system, he could be a serviceable nickel.  He never looked out of place, IMO, but I wonder if we would look for another veteran guy for Rivera like we did with Peanut and Cason.

Oh that's why we have so much Lombardi trophies

We were playing with fire this entire season having Ginn and Brown as our 1 and 2, it laughable. Cam is that transcendent that he can make those two seem capable and make Gettleman feel like a genius.

You spend your money on quality players who have bought into the team and its philosophy. You grab a few mid-price free agents to fill in a hole or two in your roster, then keep your notes in case someone gets injured.

Then you spread the wealth around a bit to keep quality players who make those around them better. Then you are really selective in the draft with an eye to finding long-term team players.

Buy low, develop value, get the most out of it, then feel free to sell if a player wants a price that's too high for their real, not perceived, skill set.

The biggest problem with the biggest players in most free agency markets is that they are generally specialists. Suh distrupts the pocket and scares people, TO could stretch a defense, the interchangeable McCowns can learn a playbook and pack up their families quickly... Those are great if you need just that particular itch scratched. If you need more than that, they often fall short. Suh can't lead a defense or a locker room to save his life. TO wasn't going over the middle where he could get hit, the McCowns could carry a game, but not a season. And if they aren't a no-longer needed specialist, they've often gotten too much tread worn off the tires or some other little secret.

Remember when Percy Harvin was missing games in Minnesota because of migraines? Some folks spent a lot of money to find out that was far from the whole story. Bradford was the touted starting QB for the Rams, until they unloaded him on the Eagles. The Eagles, just as craftily, said here's Foles, he's great!

Nah, let Gettleman keep Gettlemagicking. It's working wonders. NFC champs ain't bad and it won't be the end of the road either. We're probably way ahead of his schedule already.

Yes, I commented along similar lines in another thread... BUT I added an important caveat.  Not many teams will have the coach, the scheme or the personnel to implement what Denver just did.

However, I'm a bit worried that under Dan Quinn, Atlanta will get there quite quickly, or at least be able to do SOME of what Denver just did to us unless we improve.  How they prepared a solid game plan to beat us between weeks 14 and 16, and how they executed that plan was pretty impressive.  Don't think we should take Atlanta lightly in the upcoming season.

No to both.... expect to roll with Ealy, Addison and perhaps Frank Alexander

Alexander is suspended for the year next season

Only other option we have is if we convince CJ to restructure his contract heavily

I think Frank Alexander got a 12 months suspension?  So I don't think he'd be eligible until some time quite late in the season.  Can't see him making the roster without being able to be at training camp.

Am I incorrect in this understanding?  This Observer article dating from late November would suggest that he couldn't be part of the team until nearly December.
