Positions we need to upgrade

So, the same areas Gettleman has been failing to fix for 3 seasons.

Actually, I think we've made very good progress in all these areas in the past 2 seasons.  As Gettleman explained in his January press conference, "sometimes you can only make incremental changes."  With the cap you can't have all-pros at all positions.

OT:  We got Oher - big upgrade from Bell.  We got Williams who looks to be a good upgrade from Remmers.  Unfortunately Williams early injury derailed thoughts of his working into a starting role in 2015.  But he's promising for 2016.

DE:  Kony Ealy is looking great now.  Ready to step up and start.   Jared Allen didn't wow on the stat sheet, but according to Ron today, he made a huge impact in mentoring Kony and other guys on the line.  I expect that to pay some dividends.  ... and Ryan Delaire showed some very good promise - no risk, cheap way to maybe inject youth & energy into the line.

S - Kurt Coleman balled out and is looking like a great fit with our team.  Definitely a keeper.  Tre Boston looks to be ready to step up next season.

WR - KB in 2014; Devin in 2015.  Should make a pretty fearsome duo in 2016, God willing.  Bringing back Ginn was needed.  We need his speed.  He's a great fit in our scheme.

So, tell me again Dave G. hasn't done anything to improve at these positions?  I don't believe you.  My eyes and our record say otherwise.   The one concession I'll make is that I would have liked to see Ealy starting games in the second half of the season.  I'm really not a CJ fan.  But that's not on Dave...

the point is this has been the case for how many years now ? 1 to 2 yr stop gaps is not addressing the issue.

Why did we not try to develop Daryl Williams any this year?

I knew this would happen to Mike Remmers. I wanted Daryl Williams to take his spot before the playoffs started but I thought most on this forum would be against it because of o-line chemistry. I guess I was right.

Who are the stop gaps on that list?  I would have thought this about Oher, but honestly, he was surprisingly good in pass blocking this year.  I'm quite happy to keep him while we train up a replacement, and hopefully D. Williams proves to be a stud at RT.

Ealy - not a stop gap.- we could be looking at our next all pro if he keeps playing anything like he did Sunday

Coleman - not a stop gap - led the league in interceptions by a safety.  Nearly made the pro bowl

KB - not a stop gap.  Devin looking like the real deal.

Ginn brings speed we really have needed as a team, adds a whole new level of threat to our offense....

OT - Went from an all pro OT to failed experiments in Bell and Chandler. That is on Gettleman. Set the Panthers back with that decision and now trying to get  by with Remmers and Oher. 15 draft picks in 3 drafts. Waste of possible starting OTs that could perform as well or better than Remmers.

DE - Kony Ealy is a poor man's Charles Johnson. Not anything opposing offenses will worry about. He is not "great". He is inconsistent but serviceable just like Charles Johnson at the end of his career. Kony is no where near a young CJ. People act like he is going to be an all pro DE when he is miles away from it.

S - Coleman has his moments, but his failures offset those moments. The team believes Tre Boston is not good enough to start and is just a special teams player. When Harper and Coleman are ahead of you, that means you might be a bust. Nothing has been done to make an impact at this position for years. The LBs cover up these failings

WR - KB and Funchess are far from fearsome right now. KB is a big player coming off an ACL. They take at least a year to return to their previous level if they manage to do that. KB relies on his jump ball abilities and he comes down awkwardly. Everyone hope he can correct and heal. Funchess does not threaten any defense. Once again it is hope. The Panthers had a feared weapon at WR that is still feared and dominating in the league. Still a ways away from replacing what the Panthers lost.

Stop calling these weaknesses 'great'. These are all positions fans HOPE turn out well. The Panthers need players who are proven and command respect from other teams. The only players Gettleman has brought in over 3 seasons that command respect are at DT. I expect at least 2 players per season added to the team that command respect from opposing teams based on the history of what the Panthers have been able to do over the years.

Oher is a stop gap, allen is a stop gap, all the other cb's not named norman or bene are stop gaps, Ginn has played well but he is a stop gap. If the same positions continue to be positions of need then the problem is not being addressed.

Swear Marty Hurney has created a couple of accounts on here.  Sorry but you are Clueless.  We had a ton of other holes when Gross retired to go and throw money or a high draft pick on a overrated OT.  We could still have Fua right now instead of KK and Star with a subpar OT that wouldn't do any better than Oher played this year.  Oher was one the highest grades out OT's this year and came pretty damn close to making the probowl.  He played 10 times better than that top OT Atlanta drafted last year and the one the saints draft.

Ealy- the kid is in his 2nd year in the league.  By your standards, CJ was terrible until his 4th year in the league despite getting to play with Peppers his 1st 4 seasons.  Ealy just ended the season strong and would have been the Super Bowl MVP had we won tieing the Super Bowl sack record to go with his pick.  Oh well guess we should have drafted Morgan Moses one of those top OT's.  Sounds like you were one of the guys who threw a fit for not drafting Mose.

Coleman had a few bad mistakes this season, but to say a guy that had a season like him is a patchwork guy knows nothing about football.  You'd rather just go throw that $$$$ out and we end up in Charles Godfrey mess.  Yes the Mess that put us back Way farther than Gross randomly retiring and is drafting a DT that an all-pro this year vs another bust top round OT.

Funch started to come out.  Again you seem clueless. The only rookie WR's that looked better than him this season were Cooper and Lockett (a lot though came from his return skills). Darn we we sure should've drafted Dorsett or DGB over Shaq.  Gettlemans an idiot.

this isn't 10 yeas ago.  Kids return from ACL tears all the time.  TD, 3 tears.  Gurley came back and dominated.

i really hope you were joking with your post above
