Positions we need to upgrade

I'm laughing at be idiots that still think WR is a huge need KB will be back if this game proved anything it is that we need to be better in the trenches OT primarily.

Can't rely 100% on KB to do all the work. The rest of the bunch lack consistency. They could definitely use a reliable wide receiver with speed. Someone like Ginn who can actually catch the ball on a consistent basis. The drops are killing me.

Nothing new.

Need to improve our T play (answer possibly is already on the roster)

Need to improve our DBs

Need to improve our DEs

Need to improve our WRs (getting Kelvin back isn't enough.  B/c we can't go back to the 2014 version where we lack speed.  I'm done with Ginn.  We need a roleplaying speedster IMO.)

RB and TE are also on my list too.

Honestly Ginn is fine as a No. 3. Him and Brown are good for speed guys. What we need is a playmaker who doesn't just run fly routes but a WR that can catch shot passes and run.

That could be solved by a RB or a WR like Harvin or Lockett in the draft.

Cotch is the one that can easily be replaced by an Andre Johnson or Boldin.

They scored 32 points a game with out KB.

I would rather a second pass catching TE.... For the the offense we run... WR is very low on the list of needs if you pay attention to the way gman drafts you would know this....

I get what you're saying, and I think that it works if the Oline holds up... If Cam gets lots of opportunities to make good throws, the drops don't matter as much. But when there are only a few opportunities to make a play, the drops are critical. Like when Cotch dropped that pass at the 5-yard line, or when the ball bounced right off Ginn's hands, or when Ginn completely missed the ball and it was intercepted. I'm sure it's low on Gettleman's list though... can't argue there.

Another injury next year at wr will hurt us. Isn't cotch a fa?  We need to find a guy that can stretch the field. If Ginn goes down we're fuged.

Thank you. What if KB goes down next year? Or Funchess?

Like people do understand that we are not promised an injury free WR unit next year right?

What if Olsen gets hurt?

I understand you cannot just dump all your resources into the WR position, but we can get better in that area. And it doesn't have to cost a lot or much effort.

Again, Andre Johnson or Boldin; and a second round WR/RB with the ability to make guys miss in one on one battles should do the trick.

We cannot continue to just rely on the right arm of Newton.

We need YAC in this offense.

The instances you pointed out are the exact situations were we would rely on Kelvin Benjamin he would have out muscled them and pulled those in... I think some of you have forgotten how good he was and that was before cam took huge strides this season... The offensive line will be addressed in fact I'd be willing to bet OT and DE are the primary areas of Gmans focus...

I hope you're right!

And you realize it's likely that Funchess continues to developer into our #2 the panthers will have two huge physical targets to rely on.... Which will out Ginn back to his spot at #3 field stretcher.... A second pass catching TE would do this offense a lot more good than anther speedster....

I agree with a lot of this but my question is do you think this offense could use a WR/TE/RB that could get YAC? The Panthers, for about the 4th year in a row, ranked among the bottom in YAC.

And if you do, do you think KB or Funchess (or anyone else on our roster) is capable of that?

Question about safeties.  It's a position I really don't know all that much about (e.g. dif between SS & FS).
If Harper retires, we still have Tre Boston & Coleman.  Coleman basically took the starting spot we thought was Tre's.   Do the two work as starters together, or do Tre / Coleman play the same role and we would need someone else to take Harper's spot?

Where/how does Dean Marlowe fit into this picture?  He didn't get a lot of snaps... and I confess I paid little to no attention to his play when he was in the game.   Is he looking solid enough that he could be reliable depth behind Coleman & Boston?

Here's Scott Fowler's take on what we need to do in the offseason to upgrade & get back to the Super Bowl.

Quote

So how does Carolina get back to the Super Bowl and this time win it?

1) Draft an offensive tackle early. Pro Football Focus, the independent analytics website, said that right tackle Mike Remmers allowed three sacks and seven quarterback hurries Sunday night. It was a horrible game for Remmers. He was also unfairly tasked too often by coaches with blocking Denver Super Bowl MVP Von Miller one-on-one.

How could Carolina not have devoted two blockers to Miller on every single play after realizing early how badly Remmers would struggle? I just don’t get it.

As bad as Newton seemed, PFF actually graded him out higher than any other Carolina offensive player. Newton had four dropped passes. His lone interception glanced off Ted Ginn’s hands. He was sacked six times. If he was any less athletic, it would have been 10.

‘We dared him to throw’

2) Upgrade the wide receiving corps. Denver has three very good cornerbacks. The Broncos loaded up the tackle box to stop Carolina’s running game and dared the Panthers wideouts to beat them one-on-one.

Too often, those wideouts just could not do it (and tight end Greg Olsen couldn’t, either). Here’s where the return of Kelvin Benjamin for the 2016 season will help Carolina considerably.

But is that really enough? Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman needs to look hard at finding a better No. 2 receiver to pair with Benjamin and using Ginn and Philly Brown as receivers No. 3 and 4.

Panthers wide receiver Ted Ginn was targeted the most of any player in the Super Bowl. Newton threw at Ginn 10 times, completing four for 74 yards and having one glance off Ginn’s hands for an interception.

What Denver’s Harris said in postgame was true: “We knew that if we got the lead, it was over. Our defense is too good. They weren’t going to be able to come back. We knew Cam couldn’t travel 80 yards on us. We dared him to throw. The game plan was, can you throw on us? Me, [cornerback Aqib] Talib and [Bradley] Roby. We knew he couldn’t throw on us.”

Actually, Newton could – but he needs more targets.

3) Keep Josh Norman. Carolina’s secondary got iffy late in the season after a bunch of injuries, but Norman was Carolina’s best cornerback by a long shot. He’s about to become a free agent. Ideally, the Panthers will sign Norman to a long-term deal. If not, they must place the franchise tag on him and rent him at a very high price for another year. You simply can’t let Norman walk away for nothing.

Ultimately, the Panthers said all season that they loved to dab and dance and take sideline photos and that if a team didn’t like it, all it had to do was stop them.

Denver stopped them, all right.

But the Panthers are still extremely talented. And if they handle this crushing disappointment the right way, they will be back.

I was surprised he seemed to forget all about Funchess as a potential #2 WR... but obviously if we can find better WR talent at the right price, it's not out of the question.  I just recall that Cam seems to need some time with guys to develop chemistry...

We got our asses handed to us last night by a team without an offense. Our defense was fairly solid, our special teams were below average and our offense was mediocre.   So where do we go from here ?  What positions do you think G Man needs to upgrade the most in order to get us back to the big game in 2017 and win it ?  And do you still have faith in Shula ball and Riveras preparation of the team ?

OC- Shula needs to be upgraded

OL, RB, S, CB, DE

I'm assuming that Roman Harper, Jared Allen, Charles Johnson, and possibly Jonathan Stewart will all be gone, thus making some holes. Josh Norman is gone eventually too but even if he isn't the team still needs another CB.

Losing Norman puts us further behind at CB , we have never caught up after Gamble left.
