Does Cam Newton stay in the pocket for too long?

Not to say this is a bad thing but I can't help but feel that throughout the season he has sat in the pocket longer than he should. Most of he time he is able to just sit there since our Oline is that bloody good but i feel like I've seen Cam take a good amount of sacks that were cause he should have bailed out sooner. It could be just me but I am curious what anyone else has noticed....

He's just proving he can beat you with his arm this year. It's remarkable that he has so much talent, really. He is as good as ANYBODY throwing the ball, but can run the ball better than most RBs in the league.

I laugh when people say make Cam beat you from the pocket. He has. 17 times this year.

Some prior athletic quarterbacks (McNabb is a prime example) were known to pass up on running opportunities just to show they could be passers first, and this to the detriment of their team.

Newton hasn't done that,  He's become a true, balanced, dual threat quarterback.

And I'm extremely happy about that.

Cam stays in the pocket a long time sometimes because he trusts his feet and his ability to escape.  Maybe once a game he'll take a big loss because of this but usually we come out ahead.  You don't want his confidence to take a hit so I bet coaches kind of let it slide, but throwing it away would be better.

I think it has more to do with the confidence he has in his offensive line.  Those guys give him a lot of time back there.  And he milks it all he can to give the WR time to get open.  Like Scot says this shows how far h's come as a QB.  As he refines his game and he gets more weapons around him you will see that it will be more and more difficult to game plan against him.  I you play the pass he will run if you play him to run he will find a receiver.

Like Cam said, We have not seen anyone that we can compare him to.  He's unique.

it seems if sometimes he is forcing himself to be a pocket passer....so he is waiting on some plays to come open when he had running lanes open almost instantly. that said it seems to be working for him and long term its better for his game even in the short term he is taking some sacks he could have avoided.

The only reason I mention it is cause Russel Wilson always seems to scramble and conjour up some lucky poo, granted their Oline is not as good but wud be nice to see Cam get some of those same plays.

Two things:

1:  Russell "needs" to be moving around a bit, it's more of a height thing than anything else.  Just can't see over the linemen all that well when they are 8 inches taller than him.

2:  Those throws that you are calling "lucky" really aren't, just too many of them work to be considered "luck".  Not to mention, and I said it earlier in the season.....Wilson throws the ball on the move better than I have ever someone do it.  He and Rodgers are two of the best at that.

In his defense, he spent 31/2 years without the luxury of a pocket. I say let the man enjoy it.
