WR/L CB

played both ways, did some FS when our star went down

has a scholarship to play at UNC Chapel Hill, but Sep 11th pissed me off and I joined the military instead.

I often think what if, but I know in my heart of hearts that I made the right decision

Only played one year of football, Sr year of HS (I was a hockey player, and damn good. Played for US National Team in World Jr's, but that's a different story), but I was a good athlete. Anyway, rode the pine as a RB and CB, played a few plays at end of games mostly, as we were not good. Last game, last play we were going to beat a good rival, I intercepted a deep ball and tried to take it to the house; hadn't ever touched the ball in a game, ever. Got tackled at the 5 Yard line, game and career over. Afterward, Coach said, "Nice play" and I told him, "Could've done that all year if you'd given me a chance".  Boom. True story. Every word of it.

Funny, I had the same comment.   I was buried on the depth chart as a junior in high school.  Got hit by a car, had mono, pulled both groins, and played 3rd string QB (had never played football before).  Almost quit.  I asked for a position change at the end of my Jr year, so he put me behind a guy getting recruited by every damn college in the country (ended up at Wake).  After 5 games, I was a rotational player, with 1 catch for 18 yards (I was mainly a defensive player).  Then the guy in front of me missed a practice.  I finished the season as the starter--with 445 yards on 22 catches. I got scholarship offers, and went to WCU.  At an awards banquet at the end of the season, my coach talked about how I came on "like gangbusters" at the end of the season.  We had a few sentences (The Wake guy and I were the only 2 players to get scholarships).  I threw my statement away.  I said , "Thanks coach for recognizing my ability before it was too late.  To be successful, you have to have 3 things: 1. Talent.  I think that I proved  I have it,   2) Opportunity.  I needed to be in the game when my number was called.  3) A coach who understands the first 2."

It was a backhanded insult, but they clapped as if I was giving him a compliment.  I am glad now that they took it that way, but I had learned to hate him when I was pond scum in his eyes--funny how he changed but made it sound as if I had.

That's awesomeness!

Ever seen Andy Reid in that competition?

Linebacker in a 5-2 defense in junior high and high school.

Started as a safety and a guard in pee-wee. Tried runningback my freshman year of high school but wasn't that good at it. Had the speed and the elusiveness but not the hands (couldn't catch a cold). Tried some defensive line too but wasn't big enough.  Linebacker is definitely my natural position.

I played tight end/DE in juniors but then switched to water polo in middle school/high school because all my friends played and it was really fun and we traveled all the time to hawaii and poo. I played college water polo too and then got really sick of the sport. I wish I could go back and tell my teenage self to switch back to football. I ended up growing and by the time I was a junior in high school I was 6'4 225 lbs. Coulda been the GOAT.

Seems like a tough sport. Is there as much kicking in the nuts as rumored ?

I had a 'moment of glory' in junior high...sort of.

The coach of the team we were playing had been in the hospital up until two days before they opened the season against us, so they'd only practiced twice before game day, and it showed.

On their first attempt at punting, I was in on the line.  I broke through between two guys but tripped over the center.  I was on my knees watching when the punter took the ball...

...and kicked it straight up the ass of a guy who was blocking in two yards front of him.

While that guy danced around holding his traumatized rump, I went after the ball.  We wound up with it somewhere inside the 20 yard line.

I walked off the field chuckling at what I'd seen, and then suddenly all my teammates were coming over to pat me on the back.

Apparently, nobody saw what really happened and everybody thought I had blocked the punt.

I admit I didn't bother to correct them.

Played Safety and some WR my freshman and sophmore year. Got bumped up from the freshmen team to varsity after the 3rd game my freshmen year.  We moved from VA to NC in September so my JR year was a wash. Didn't play SR year because I wanted to focus on school and college. If I can go back in time, Id play my senior year.
