Cam Newton disappointed me

I see Jordan a good amount in Chima sitting upstairs in the back privately. Not once did I have the inkling to go up to him and chat like we are friends just because most people who are widely recognized just like a few minutes to themselves every now and then.

On a sidenote, my boys 3 and 6 a few months ago saw kuechly at Southpark mall while they were with their mom and literally made a 40 yard dash to him and took a quick picture, they are kids who don't know any better and luckily Luke was in a mood to stop and snap a quick picture.

That dude ALWAYS does. He is an autograph machine. Seriously. Some Panthers staff people told me how amazed they were by his willingness to do things like that.

I don't blame Cam. This week has been exhausting on him from a media standpoint. The last thing he wants to do is draw more attention to himself and have everyone rushing over to hm asking for autographs and pictures.

Sometimes you just need to appreciate the moment rather than attempt to get more from it. Being a huge Braves fan, I've had several run ins with more prominent players in personal/private situations. They key is you just act as they are any other person and let them go on with their business. Maybe say "Hey, what's up? Good luck this week" and move on.

Weirdest exchange I ever had was with Mike Hampton at a urinal at the ESPN Zone in NYC.

Meh, it's not a big deal OP. He was there waiting on his foot and had his hood on. That's the first indication that he doesn't want to be bothered. Then a handler told you guys no photos, he doesn't want to be bothered. I'm sure there was no hard feelings from him but if he spoke and took pictures to your kids he would've had to do it with everyone in the restaurant. I'm sure after meetings, practice and the media he wanted to get food and go to his room. I'm positive that's why he didn't dine in. Usually when you see celebs engaging in dinner, lunch or just with family don't bother them. It's common courtesy. He's busy. People expect way too much and forget these people are human and go through things like the rest of us. They don't wanna be bothered at times and that's perfectly okay. Teach your children that when you see a celeb and they're eating or waiting on food, leave them alone. That's private time.

I've heard the same exact story before from a couple about 2 years ago. This couple had just got married and saw him at a restaurant downtown, wedding gown on and all. They sat at the table right beside him and his friends, waited for the right opportunity, then leaned over and asked one of his friends if they could get a pic with him on their wedding night. The friend asked Cam, Cam looked over at them, said "congratulations" and that was it.

I've always brushed off that story b/c as others have said, you can't do it for everybody. But there are certain circumstances where it seems he could do a little more. Seems to me after these stories, that Cam is a little different when the cameras are off. Still love him though.

Lol, at least he said congrats. He could've been an asshole and flat our ignored them. I've met him while the cameras were off and he was extremely nice. I think because he's actually a human (contrary to what some may believe), he has his moments where he does not want to be bothered and that's no crime.

I've had only one bad experience with Athletes as a child but most have been great experiences with Athletes.

My bad experience was when I was in high school and we went to a UNC girls basketball game. Rick Fox, King Rice and Scott Williams were at the game. My team went up to them and asked for an autograph and they said no. They were all just sitting there and dismissed us. I was a huge UNC fan then. Later in college we were playing NC Central and I see Grant Hill and Thomas Hill at the game. After the game I went up to Grant and asked for an autograph.and he obliged. Became a Duke fan then. I understand why Cam wouldn't have signed because of the situation of it being superbowl week and right after media day. I would have been happy like the tweet in just getting a picture of him and not together. However like my UNC experience when players are really being d*cks and full of themselves then I would make a thread about them and bash them..LOL..You have to look at the entire situation and not just that moment.

I really don't think Cam is different off camera. He seems to be very truthful, even when it rubs people the wrong way. I can see him being cranky and testy with people, and I'm okay with that because I am too sometimes. I think the ironic thing is that he has been criticized for having fake attributes, when in reality he is a very authentic person.

Well said.

It sucks for the OP and his family. Sorry for them.

However, I remember when the gentleman asked Cam to kiss his wife on Monday. One of the things Cam said in disapproval was: 'If I do it for you and your wife, then I have to do it for everyone else here'.

So, he's well aware of that, especially if he just wanted to go back in his room, and he was already exhausted.

i would say his having his hoodie on in the restaurant was all you needed to know

...and a teachable moment that people want and need space even if it is star athlete who frankly if a camera had been there might have given a different response

I love Cam Newton the football player, and he is probably suffering from super bowl fatigue, but just like sitting next to someone with headphones on in an airplane indicating the person doesn't want to talk to a fellow traveler, Newton's body language was telling you and your kids to not intrude and that was a teachable moment for you.

i understand the disappointment as well...or as Cam would say, his new favorite phrase replacing 'unbelievable',  'but yet...'

Good Points

I have a feeling if Cam were alone with, it would have been a different story.

But during  yesterday (after 3 sessions with the media already, start of real practice) in a public setting, he obviously wanted no part of it. So the OP had to think about that/look at the things that way as well.

Imagine how many people would have suddenly rushed over to Cam and asked for his autograph if he would have signed there's?

Remember,  you're not alone with him. And he's at a restaurant trying to eat/order lunch or pick up food.

That's almost a big no no with celebrities when they're eating, especially when with their families or close friends (which apparently Cam was not, based off this story).

You sound like Nashville mom... What else can he do, it will never be enough.  You looked at it through a microscope and said, it's just us, it's not a big deal, "my kids deserve it"  To Cam, he's been hounded by media, fans, literally everyone in the world nonstop 24/7 for the last 5 YEARS!

Get over yourself.  If you want an autograph, go buy one.

He's clearly tired of the distractions that go along with super bowl week.  On a typical road game these guys fly in Saturday, play Sunday and leave after the game.  They've been in SF all week and have been answering questions for 2 weeks.  I can imagine they are all getting irritated by being out of routine and anxious to just play the game.  That being said, I would watch from afar but not approach a star athlete in public unless it was clear that they were talking to the public at that time.  They are humans like everyone else and probably don't want to be "on" 24/7.

Being from northern Cali we don't get the chances y'all do to run into your favorite panther players, especially a few days before the biggest game in our history. Kids love cam, mainly cuz their dad loves cam, just hated to see the disappointment on their faces, if I was just there, I would've just ordered my food and ate and moved on. But the kids was excited and it hurts to say I allowed them to let down

PS4 should solve any problems...
