This was really good Huddlers.

About 3/4th's the way through the article there is an excerpt from Ryan Clark explaining the difference between problems with race and culture.

(Delete if it's a duplicate thread)

I want to say this to some of my white fellow panther fans... who are new to the ideas of "White privilege" and "cultural bias."  Having Cam Newton as the quarterback of the Carolina Panthers, I believe has done something that people really didnt expect. It has caused alot of people to take another look at racial relations and cultural bias as it pertains to sports. Alot of people have really changed up their tone about Cam and even the media is coming around and changing their tone on it.

But try not to get too crazy with it... everything isn't racist. There are plenty of black people who aren't fans of Cam's braggadocious tendencies. But it really is all about what generation you're from and how much you understand where Cam Newton is from. I've mentioned this before that even in black culture and even hip hop culture, everything and everyone is not the same.

Culturally, you can not prefer the dancing or the dressing style... but when you label a person a "thug" is racists. The idea that a white quarterback is "smarter" because he throws from the pocket is racists. It's cool that everyone is racially sensitive right now and Some of you are new to how to use the race card... Take it from black people...

If you use it too much, it kind of loses it efficacy.

I tweeted that video from Mike & Mike with Ryan Clark because, for me, that's the reason for all the nonsense about Cam. It's a complicated issue but it really is as simple as that. And I'm glad he got out what he had to say about it now, this week, because you know some idiot reporter will ask the question next Monday. Now he can say he already addressed it & leave it at that. Let Tolbert make the OMG statements on media day. :P

Thank you! And, yes, that video especially is really good. Haha Wilson has no .......

I actually expect the best soundbites to come from the Dark Knight himself

Ryan Clark is spot on.

Not to deny that there are ignorant people full of piss and vinegar out there but it's really just like Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Muhammed Ali, Wilt Chamberlain, Michael Jordan etc etc.

anytime there is a shift from one standard to the next there is always a little pushback from those experiencing it.  Some like the change, some fiercely defend the old way.  It's really not a new thing.

I gotta be honest, I wish people would just let this issue sink into oblivion. Race issues or not, Cam's play has demanded the media's attention and commanded their respect. Up until his controversial interview, Cam had let his play do the talking. And I honestly wish he had let it stay that way.

I still love my QB. But this was an unnecessary comment that is causing unnecessary distraction during the biggest two weeks of the NFL calendar for the Panthers. Make these comments after the freaking Super Bowl at least.

If Cam wants to be an activist for the cause of equality for African Americans, then he is more than qualified as a superstar in America's biggest sport. But his models should be King and Parks, who let their actions speak louder than their words, and their character be what commanded respect. What Cam said is no different than what Stephen A. Smith does, or Al Sharpton or Jessie Jackson. I don't blame Cam. But this was the wrong time to say anything, and I'm not so sure that anything needed to be said now that his play is forcing the media to give him a fair shake, just like King's efforts in the 60s forced America to give African Americans a fair shake.

@UpstatePanther There will be an attempt to bring it up Monday. You know it. I know it. The president of Iran knows it. And now all Cam has to say is, I said what I have to say last week, not going to say more. And it will be shot down. He can pull a Marshawn Lynch for all the world cares and he will be supported. Saying it now gives it time to filter through the media and takes away the distraction it would be. It was a brilliant move.

I agree. I was just saying that I wish he hadn't said anything. His play is elevating the status of black quarterbacks very well, no comments needed.

I understand. But maybe you really meant to say that you wish he didn't need to say anything. And that I understand too, and would agree with.

I will have to disagree with you here. Racial tensions havent been this high since the civil rights movement. There were plenty of black athletes who used their success as a platform to speak out about injustice and racism. Muhammad Ali, Arthur Ashe, Tommie Smith & John Carlos are all examples of how people have used their celebrity to bring awareness. It's not like we don't have issues... Just look at the water crisis in Flint, Michigan.

Alot of young black people feel unprotected and disenfranchised by the legal system. 48 years after Dr Kings death, young black men fear police brutality just like in the early 1900's.

Cam Newton is not trying to make a statement here. He's only responding to the conditions he's asked to perform in. He has been publicly criticized and has had his character consistently brought into question based upon the fears of a culture dominated by the privilege of being the majority. I don't understand why anyone should have a problem with the statements that he makes... when there are literally people who get paid monthly to reinforce prejudice.

You will often find that people most tired of talking about race are those who have experienced the negative ramifications of it the least.

You're missing my point. I think Cam's character and play are speaking much louder than his words ever could. That's all I'm saying.
