In college, he played both free safety and outside linebacker. When he was drafted, he was officially listed as a safety meaning he had to use a defensive back number. Over the course of his rookie year he was used increasingly in the OLB role, particularly against Mike Vick who it was always assumed Davis was drafted as a counter for. In his second year, he was officially converted to linebacker and had to switch numbers.

Only jersey I still wear is my blue Thomas Davis 47. 

I remember being bummed when he switched to 58, but as the years go on, the 47 becomes more and more special.
