Cam Newton Becomes New Face Of The NFL During MVP Season-Forbes

Good business, marketing development article on Cam in Forbes.

We know Cam's been very popular, talked about, and/or controversial since he came into the NFL. Right!?.. So this article will be no surprise to many. However, for those of us who (really) believe so many people HATE Cam. You may end up thinking differently?

Marketing people, and advertisers don't see it that way. They see a lot of people who respond to, and/or are impressed by Mr. Newton (and it's been that way since he came into the league up till now BTW).

This is a nuts and bolts, lengthy business article in Forbes. It's not some opinion piece by ESPN, supplemented with selective quotes.

It's also Something to chew on besides the game, as many of you are dealing with Wintry weather.

Please ignore some of the factual/Opinion/Football errors in the article (I'll let you guess where). As I said; it's a business magazine. LOL

This is something we all knew as Panther fans. The more people who see Cam, the more they would like him. I'm sure that's the reason for this rise, mentioned below.

Quote

Newton’s MVP performance and connection with younger fans has created a marketing juggernaut. “We’ve never seen a rise like this from any athlete like we’ve seen with Cam,” says Peter Laatz, an executive at research firm Repucom. Laatz is referencing data from his company’s Celebrity DBI, which tracks consumer perceptions of celebrities.

That was his rise. Here's where Newton is now according to these people and their metrics:

Quote

Newton has moved up an average 21 spots among active NFL players over the past four months across the eight metrics DBI measures. He now ranks among the top 10 players almost across the board with a trendsetter rating that trails only Russell Wilson. His influence score is fourth-best behind Wilson, Peyton Manning and Aaron Rodgers. His overall DBI score is on par with NBA MVP Stephen Curry, five-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Champion Jimmie Johnson and UFC star Ronda Rousey.

If you drill into the data even deeper, you’ll find that Newton resonates even greater with the next generation of NFL fans in the coveted 13-25 demographic. Older fans write letters condemning Newton’s “egotism, arrogance and poor sportsmanship.” They don’t like the dancing and the “dabbin.” Young fans love it though. They see a 26-year-old having fun on the football field. He takes victory laps around Bank of America BAC +0.00% Stadium high-fiving fans. He chest bumps six-year-old cancer patients. He hands the ball to a kid in the stands after each touchdown.

Mind you, guys. This is with out a Superbowl win, or any past great performances in the playoff's. So that's phenomenal on Cam's part. Additionally, you ever noticed most people they start asking these questions after they win a Superbowl, due to their newfound notoriety? To the contrary, Cam's been building up to this (probably the reasons why that small, but boisterous group hated him as well).

And this is for the Old Curmudgeons out there below:

Quote

The NFL marketing landscape has been dominated the last decade by a quartet of now 30-something, Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees and the Manning brothers. “Those guys are boring,” says Laatz. “Cam is more entertaining and more relevant with the millennial audience.”

Currently, Newton's agent, Carlos Fleming says he's been flooded with request this year. But for all the Panther fans out there, relax. He say's they won't look at anything until after the seasons over, and will be selective in Newton's already heavy stable. Here's what's happened, and is happening with his Under Armour deal alone.

Quote

Take $3.7 billion-in-sales Under Armour UA +2.00%, which was closely identified with Newton when the QB led the Under Armour-clad Auburn Tigers to the 2011 national championship. Under Armour signed Newton to the largest shoe deal ever for a rookie before he was drafted No. 1 overall in 2011. The Baltimore-based sportswear giant extended the deal last year and made Newton the top-paid endorser in its NFL stable. Newton’s Highlight cleat was the best-selling football cleat in the U.S. last year with Newton getting royalties on every pair sold.

And for those who always have opinions on Newtons Fashion sense. According to the article it's from Newton's own Belk Clothing line (yeah, for his more tame outfits, I bet). I'm sure they don't sell Fox tails and those crushed velvet lounge slippers. Nonetheless, I digress. LOL:

Quote

Newton’s biggest deal outside the sports space is with Belk , which he partnered with after his rookie year to create his own line of apparel and accessories. The royalty-bearing deal features over 300 pieces in the collection sold in nearly 200 stores. Almost everything you see the fashion-conscious Newton wearing off the field is from his Belk line outside of the fox tail he wore to a Nov. postgame press conference.

“Cam wanted to connect with the everyday customers and not be in the high-end fashion space,” says Fleming. “It is an opportunity to create a brand that can hopefully live on after his career.”

Here's what Dannon (love that 3 person Cam commercial BTW) and Nickelodeon both knew and found out:

Quote

Another sponsor is Dannon, which replaced actor John Stamos last year with Newton for an ad campaign for its Oikos greek yogurt. The brand cited Newton’s appeal with young males. Other Newton sponsors include Beats headphones, EA Sports and Carolina’s HealthCare Systems.

No matter how the season ends for the Panthers, Newton will spend a chunk of his offseason hosting and executive producing a television show for Nickelodeon. “I Wanna Be” will feature Newton helping kids make their dreams come true. Twenty episodes is a big commitment for a network, but THE PILOTS TESTED OFF THE CHARTS with the Nickelodeon demo of 8 to 13 year olds.

Here that Panther fans?...it tested OFF THE CHARTS.

And Newton, just may have a chance to pass anyone, everyone if The Panthers can win a Superbowl (knock on wood/respect to Arizona):

Quote

But Newton might just be getting started as the new face of the NFL. His team plays Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals with a Super Bowl berth on the line. “A Super Bowl win would put him up over the top,” says Laatz. “The Super Bowl is the biggest stage you can perform on in the U.S. I don’t think his rise is anywhere close to done.”

Yes. Cam has a small, but loud group of internet morons. However, some of us must realize he's very popular with young people, young adults, and mothers/women (though that's not mentioned here; Ranting Tennessee Mom's aside) to name a few. Always has been (though it's obviously increasing as of late). So it's not always a Pity Party.

Yes, the article did mention the Great Greg Olsen, Cam Gatorade commercial and endorsement relationship (I just didn't include it for space reasons) for those who wondered. LOL

Congratulations Cam on you marketing prowess. Now win Sunday. We'll worry about the Superbowl if/or when necessary!

Oh, I think plenty of people do hate Cam, same as plenty of people hate Aaron Rodgers, Peyton Manning and Tom Brady.  Beating their favorite team has a way of making people angry.

But marketing to the masses is done with the understanding that some people aren't gonna like it.

And for those of you that insist Newton's isn't well liked. Check this out:

It would be interesting if you could ever come up with a single instance where any of us ever claimed that Cam wasn't "well liked" with YOUNG PEOPLE.

I'm betting you can't.

But straw-men are built for strong arguments.

Newton’s brand is built on fun and the Nickelodeon show gives him a chance to showcase that even more

This is what I love.  When I was in Atlanta eating the night before the game I noticed a ton of kids wearing #1 jerseys.  It's phenomenal to think about the impact he is making on the youth.

You think all those Internet Morons who show up out the woodwork in predictable Pavlovian fashion, and other internet sites aren't largely composed off 18-26 yr olds?

Plus, even if what you're saying was true. You/they can still miss the point.

Most people here don't extrapolate where the criticism comes from, they just speak in generalities as it's some monolith out there. You know that.

Lastly, I wasn't condemning anyone. I was just pointing out Cam's more popular than some of us usually give him credit for. So no straw man on my part at all.

Enjoy the article

I always thought Cam was well liked.

It's just that the people who hate him, get their voices heard more by the media.

Bingo!

It's like his draft.

The guys a freaking #1 overall pick. But some would want you to believe he was one of the most flawed recent picks, or he was actually drafted (or should have been) #18 based off what Non NFL people were saying. LOL

Sometimes, we have Big Ears and only See, Hear the negatives mostly.

Shoot!  A lot of people would have had to like him to be a #1 overall pick (and not just the Panthers). Cause no team makes an absolute reach at #1; where the other teams below would have drafted the guy at 26 (or something) if the Panthers didn't at #1.

Think about it. LOL

Yeah. But even if you take that logic, then Panther fans shouldn't cry hate as they do. Cause that would only reinforce the notion, that he's not as hated as many believe. Make sense?

Don't get me wrong. I do believe there's a strong group of fans out there that misunderstand Cam due to the media hit jobs that were done on him. Yes I do.

Nonetheless, that doesn't take away from the fact that there are a bunch of fans out there that do like him. Some of here don't always realize this. Kinda like the post, that suggested the NFL may ban the Sunday Giveaway cause they "hate Cam". Remember?...That's the kinda thinking I was talking about in my post.
