Panthers interested in Pat Shurmur?

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports Eagles OC Pat Shurmur will interview with the Vikings.

It's unclear which job Shurmur is interviewing for, as running backs coach is the Vikings' only vacancy. Shurmur could be drawing interest as a "passing game coordinator," the same position he's in the mix for in Los Angeles. Shurmur has also received calls from the Ravens and Panthers.

Could be as the passing game coordinator with the idea that he would be the successor at OC if/when Shula gets a head coaching job. They may not feel like Dorsey is ready to be an OC and it gets him in the building earlier to mesh with the team. He and McDermott were together in Philly for nearly 10 years so that's probably where the connection and recommendation comes from.

Not quite.

Shurmur was with the Eagles from 1999-2008.  The Eagles linebacker coach from 1999 to 2003 was a fellow by the name of Ron Rivera.

That probably explains why Shurmur got an interview for the OC position that ultimately went to Mike Shula even though all his experience is in a different style of play (WCO).

If we're looking at him for some role on our staff, it's probably his familiarity with Rivera.  And given that he's a WCO guy, passing game coordinator makes the most sense (we don't currently have one).

I don't know much about the guy, but would be a good idea to get someone in with OC experience (like actually calling plays during the game) to learn our system and get comfortable with it so if Shula ever leaves the transition would be more seamless.  Even if the guy tweak the system to his own designs, at least being comfortable with what Cam is currently comfortable with would be important.  That's why our current offense is working: Shula already knew what Cam was comfortable with, so he just had to not change anything and let Cam start calling more of the plays.

Wow, I completely blanked on Ron being in Philly. Yeah, that's the obvious connection.
