The type of grass we use is part of the issue with the field. We use Bermuda which does not respond well in the winter and goes dormant. It is without a doubt the best grass for football and perfectly fine in the summer and fall but it can pose problems late in the season when it gets cold. The roots don't hold up as well. We might need to look into what Philadelphia does which is use bermuda grass in the fall then resod the field with kentucky bluegrass which is much hardier in the winter and is not as susceptible to being torn up.

Yep.  That Bermuda grass turns brown in the winter months.  They probably painted it green before last game too.  The sidelines were brown and the playing surface was green.
