Ron vs Arians on "prevent mode"

I interpreted Ron's comments more as being directed towards Shula.  I'm sure Ron wanted conservative playcalls to use up clock in the second half - but ultimately, we played too conservatively and weren't able to hold possession which gave the Seahawks a chance to come back.

Shula basically took Cam out of the game in the second half.  He's the league MVP and he's thrown 27 TDs vs. 3 INTs in the past nine games.  At a certain point, you have to trust him to take care of the ball and give your guys a chance to make plays and score.

There's a difference in aggressively throwing downfield vs. throwing short to intermediate routes to keep the defense honest.  Seattle knew we were going to run the ball on the majority of plays and that's why they were able to stop us so consistently.

If you're not doing what the boss wants, you're gone. Somebody else made the point that there's no excuse for giving up so many points with so many All Pros on the defense.

We knew the weaknesses in the defense (Finnegan and McClain)  and Russell attacked those repeatedly. It would be better with bene and Tillman, but we don't have them and this is what we're left with

I agree that those are two of the weaknesses with DE being a distant second. BUT, those weaknesses existed in the first half and they were still able to shut them out. I don't think it's likely given Ron's history, but I wouldn't be sad to see someone better come in.

We gave up that deep TD blitzing J Norman but the miscalculation was that they played a Defense that geared toward the quick 1st down pass not the deep streak. Coleman jumped on inside technique but a perfect pass and great catch got that score.

Give the Seahawks some credit bc they did execute. They are 5-2 in games where they were down by at least  9 points in the 4th for a reason.

The main part of winding it down was on the offensive end beginning with that last drive of the 1st half.

Our offensive play calling was conservative in the second half, not the defensive play calling.   One could argue that the reason the Seahawks got back into the game was because they were able to take advantage of our aggressiveness on defense.

Defense just played poorly.  I thought Lockett pushed off on Coleman and that other Td in front of Norman was just a lottery throw.  The game shouldn't have even been close, but I do think its hard to keep focus and intensity up after 31-0.  I'm sure the lockerroom was getting out of control and drinking champagne at the half

Some of it is on the players too.  Cam's execution was not sharp in the 2nd half.  Had a wide open receiver on 3rd down and he threw the ball at his feet.

I heard a couple interesting discussions on playing prevent defense, maybe shows us the difference between Ron and Bruce Arians.

On the Packers last drive, Cardinals DC wanted to play prevent defense, rush 3 and drop 8 to keep Rodgers from throwing a Hail Mary. Bruce over-ruled him and told him to rush the passer, keep the pedal down.

Panthers go into prevent defense after taking a 31 point lead, nearly blow the game. In Ron's presser he says he was disappointed that they played prevent... so why didn't Ron at some point tell Sean to change it up. Pretty sure he has final say as to what happens on the field .

What do you guys think, was Ron ok with the defense being called and then kind of throw Sean under the bus in his presser?

Two different situations. We got sloppy. It wasnt bad play call, It wasnt coordinators/coaching(Like many of you suggested) You go up double or nothing in poker, you focused. You go up 31-1 odds. you gonna have a great time.

It was simply everyone else outside of Cam,TD,Luke and Olsen(all be it some sort of dislocated shoulder.{I dont know what that was officially but judging by the movement of the trainers and the pain in his face. I say it was simply a dislocate.}) slacked. and we paid big time for it. This won't happen again next weekend.

This idea works better in your head if you dont know what your were watching on TV, Panthers Didnt go prevent till late in the 4th when a quick score would have actually killed us, at which point it worked due to draining the clock.  Panthers Defense just played a bad game, from both a players and playcalling standpoint in the second half. that great play by keek to punch the ball away, caused because Finnagan broke coverage and was out of position, hence why Keek was mad after the play, if he had not saw what happened and Jump a route that should have already been covered by Fin then that's a big completion by the Seahawks instead of a great play by keek.

McClain and Fin were out of position several times yesterday.

But you got to give them credit. They kept us in, in the first half. But their lack of playtime with the team and knowledge of the book cost us. and to you doubters or haters Russell Wilson is a phenomenal quarterback and he has speed(in the backfield. which makes me even more impressed you derps would even suggest our DL is slow), if our young ends cant catch him than...

We didn't play prevent defense the whole 2nd half.  Ron said he was disappointed we went into "protect" mode or something like that.

I do think Ron had a problem, particularly with the defensive play calls in the second half.  He said we need to put players in a position to make a play and we didn't.  I take that to mean he didn't like the play calls.  I'm sure he'll address what he meant to McDermott and Shula this week.

Im not sure he will,  he obviously didn't after the other four or five games where we blew big leads this year.

Russell Wilson made some fantstic scrambling passes, what he's known for.  There was also some great sideline catches by their recievers.  They're a grat team and made some outstanding playoff caliber plays.  It wasn't that our D was just playing sh**tty in the second half.  Carson Palmer cannot scramble like Wilson.  Go Panthers!!!
