1.Steelers

The defense was is good enough to make another serious run at the playoffs, but the running game has to improve if they want to take some pressure off of Ben and keep him healthy.

2. Giants

Concerns about the receiving corps were abated and the defense was absolutely stellar in their opener. One has to wonder if the Giants will fade down the stretch, but for now they're on top of it.

3. Patriots

Way too many miscues for a team that is one of the most talented in the league. The Bills should never have been that close, and the Patriots were lucky to come away with a win in that one.

4. Chargers

The defense has to improve if the Chargers have any hope for going deep in the playoffs. LT just doesn't have the same impact he used to, but Rivers is taking up the slack again.

5. Titans

Even in a loss the Titans showed that last year wasn't a fluke, and they have an extremely dangerous defense. Kerry Collins looked good, unlike most of the older QB's did this weekend.

6. Eagles

The defense is picking up where Jim Johnson left it off but one has to wonder how the injury to McNabb will affect them over the next few weeks. The Saints will really put a test to the defense this week.

7. Falcons

The defense was better than anyone anticipated, stopping a capable offense dead and making up for an offense that lacked the spark it had last year. If Turner doesn't get it started the Falcons may find themselves in trouble.

8. Packers

The defense was extremely tough on Cutler, the 3-4 transition seems to have gone well under new coordinator Dom Capers. However, the running game has to be fixed, as it put the Packers in tough positions all night.

9. Colts

The defense is improved over last year, but the offense has lost a step or two. With the loss of Gonzalez there may be tough times in Indy soon, even more so if they can't address the issues on the OL.

10. Saints

A terrific offensive performance from the Saints, with the caveat of it being against the lowly Lions. How the Saints really stack up isn't clear for now, but this week's matchup against Philly will help paint the picture.

11. Ravens

The Ravens struggled early, which isn't a particularly good sign but the offense got it going and made up for a defense that just doesn't look the same as you'd expect from the Ravens. Times they are a changing.

12. Cowboys

The Cowboys are always good in September so Sunday's success came as no surprise to many, but can Tony Romo and company get it done in December? That's the real question on everyone's minds.

13. Vikings

Adrian Peterson showed once again why he was picked first in just about every fantasy league in the country, with 198 yards on 26 touches and 3 scores on top of that. The worrying thing is how the Browns were in the game so long.

14. 49ers

Singletary has to be pleased with the performance of the defense against a dangerous offense. The offense did exactly what it had to do in order to win. San Fran may surprise a lot of people this year, let's see if they keep it up.

15. Jets

Sanchez had a good start to his NFL career, but all credit has to go to the defense for completely shutting down the Texans' offense. Rex Ryan has these guys looking a lot better than many figured they would be.

16. Seahawks

The Seahawks fully took advantage of a matchup against one of the worst teams in the league, which should give them some confidence that they were lacking last year but it's still far too early to say how good they are.

I would rank the Panthers below the Cardinals, Dolphins, and Bills...

At this point, I think the Panthers are about #25.

As usual, I think it looks good overall. I still think the Chargers are too high. Since the beginning of last year, the Chargers have been picked by many as Super Bowl favorites. They have the advantage of playing in possibly the league's weakest division, and they still could only muster an 8-8 record last year. They very nearly lost to the Raiders last night (can't take anything away from the Raiders, though: they played a great game).

Even though the Bills also lost to their division rivals last night, I think they deserve to be ranked a bit higher, maybe at the No. 19 spot. They certainly came closer to resembling a complete team yesterday than did Miami, Arizona or Denver, and they did it all against one of the league's best teams. Yes, Denver won, but they should have lost -- to Cincinnatti!

I think the Redskins should probably be a bit higher, and the Eagles could probably move up a step or two.

Patriots lose the game if the Bills returnman just takes a knee in the end zone. Chargers struggled to beat the Raiders (the team you have at #27). Not sure I agree with these teams at #3 and #4 but on the other hand you can't really judge a team as a whole based on just one game.

I said in a thread a while back to watch out for the Niners in the West.

You don't need too many wins to secure that division, I don't expect the Cards to repeat their success, and while the Seahawks routed the Rams, they've always done so the past few years.

I was expecting something around 7-9 from the 9ers but that defense may be good enough for them to take the division. It really depends on how much longer the Cardinals. look rusty though.
