2016 Roster Churn

Really good post OP.  Pie for you.

I agree with everything except Nortman, I agree with some other posters on here that while he is OK or slightly less than OK (most of his metrics are at or slightly below average), he can be replaced cheaper through the draft or (even better) with a UDFA.  There are plenty of good punters out there who never get drafted.  Our ST is marginally better than last year but still is a problem area for us more often than not, I could see us gutting some of the lesser parts during the offseason.

The question I have re: replacing Nortmann would be disrupting the "bomb squad" chemistry.  Gano, Nortmann & JJ seem to have a really close bond.  Not sure we want to mess with that to save a fairly small amount of money.   But obviously, if the Cap is tight after signing KK and Josh... these types of cuts might be needed.

This is a good point, for sure. Logic would dictate Gettleman will focus on the "must-keep" guys (KK, Norman, Oher pehaps)  and work his way down the roster in terms of importance and also the bigger $ contracts, but he re-signed Gano pretty quickly in 2014 when we had 21 free agents to eval (I think he was the first guy extended/signed but I might be wrong) before some other guys were signed for bigger $, so he obviously wants to keep performers on ST.  At the end of the day, if he keeps Nortmann, you have to trust his decision making based on his time here so far.

One other thing I didnt think about but which is probably worth noting is we punted a fair amount just outside of FG between the 40 and 50 yd range this year (and this is based on my watching every game, I dont have the stats in hand but I think it to be true based on observation), which means we didn't try get max yardage on kicks but rather were kicking for position or using directional kicking to avoid returns to allow the D to do its thing.  That would skew some traditional stats like yards per kick, etc. when you kick from a 3 and out on a long drive, etc.

Rumor has it that Dallas won't offer Hardy a long term contract. Should we bring him back in with a modest contract offer to compensate for the Allen, Alexander and CJ departures? Let's face it. We're not gonna draft two or three DEs and expect them to play like studs right out the gate.

Ealy - Short - Lotulelei - Hardy

We also need DT depth with Edwards being cut.

Hardy had as many sacks as Mario Addison this year. He's not even worth bringing back if he had no character issues. We can get someone in the 3rd or 4th round of the draft.

OK this was a great post and what I was hoping for. This is the problem with a 15 win team. It is a deep roster filled with contributors. The issue is that we are going to have 4-5 draft picks, 1-3 FA barging bin shopping, and 1-2 udfa's or practice squad players make the team. This means we need 6-10 roster spots open up and there is no way we can keep all the players you refrenced. Especially guys getting up into their 30's. They are more expensive and declining in skill.

After the poster called me out on Nortman, I think he may be right. He is getting expensive and a middle of the road punter in 2015. In 14 PFF had him ranked in top 5 in open field punts, and his hang time is impressive, but DG is always going to look to build through the draft which means older players are going to get pushed out.

Nortman is pretty darn good at dropping the ball inside the 20. Especially, considering that we punt from shorter distances quite a bit. He has good hang time as well. I just don't see us dropping him, just to have to try and find us another one we can trust. And we do trust Nortman.

Other than that. Good job dude.

Everything is reasonable except your tolbert analysis. You do realize he was being paid 2.5 mil a year during his last 4 years. The guy is way past his prime and you want to lock him into a 3 yr deal giving him 2.5-3mil is laughable. Tolbert will get a max of 2 yrs probably at 1mil a yr and thats IF the team wants him back.

Tolbert does a LOT for this team. Even STs. He will play for a reasonable contract. And is loved by all. Unless he decides to hang em up. He is going to be a Panther. We do not have to worry about his cap hit doing any damage. Toldozer ain't going to break the bank on us.
