FWIW, Payton staying in NO

To clarify, he has a "change of control" clause.  Meaning that is Tom Benson no longer owns/controls the team, Payton can leave.

Well a change in ownership hasn't happened, so he was never looking to leave without compensation, which still makes your first post erroneous.

Im not going to act like I sat in on the meetings the last three days, but Payton said today what he's been saying about his job all year. NOLA is home and he doesn't see himself coaching anywhere else. Media reports aside, he's never said anything different.

Plus didn't Zod point out that cap-wise they wouldn't be able to afford the contract of whomever they got for Payton in a trade anyway?

That's as it currently stands with a low projected cap number. A couple restructures or a Brees extension would get them under without too much trouble. Their cap is still a disaster but they can get draft picks under it without much trouble.

the real question is, what are they going to do with the $30M man?

He will play for another 2 years.  He will still be good next year but his age will hit him fast.  Saints will fall back into irrelevance.

Call me skeptical, but as I recall Payton has only one more year on his coaching contract.

If it's truly "we don't want anyone else" and "I can't see myself coaching any other team" and all, shouldn't there have been some talk about a contract extension?

He's got 2 years remaining.

20% of their cap in one (soon to be) 37yo player. lol at the Taints.

See, this is why you don't sell out and throw everything into a single season Super Bowl run.

If it doesn't pan out, you screwed yourself for nothing.

Question still applies, though.

I was just letting you know it was 2. I don't think an extension makes sense for either party at this time. The team is coming off of two straight sub .500 years. That doesn't breed a lot of faith for ownership to extend a guy they own the rights to longer than those two years and it doesn't offer him the ability to maximize his profit.
