Cleveland seems to be all in on this moneyball concept. That could mean that if McD buys in, then he could stick around for a while. They seem to be committed to changing their philosophy. I think if McD says yes I'll do this moneyball football thing you're talking about, then he could get the job. An established head coach would not likely acquiesce to this concept. A first time head coach might. He could view it as an interesting, lucrative challenge.

i like Wilks so I'm not worried.

I was reading about that.  The thing that Haslem has to do is to show patience in the system.  Now, Pettine had apparently lost the team.  I think Haslem will have to come out and say "This coach and GM will serve their entire four year contract."  They have fired A LOT of coaches, and that's hurting everyone.  Maybe the new guys will find the right system to bring some wins back to Cleveland.

Not that I'm looking it up, but wasn't DA the last Cleveland QB to win 10 games in a season?

Yeah I think so. If I were a Cleveland fan, I would view this new direction as a real positive. It's as if the ownership is saying I know we screwed this up before. We're fixing it now. McD may like that. Not sure what he thinks of Sabermetrics and all that though. He would have to buy in and it would be pretty different than what is done here with the Panthers.

Well Cleveland has just hired a lawyer and a former baseball GM to run their football operations.

What could possibly go wrong?

As a Browns season ticket holder, I can honestly say that we’ve never been more screwed than we are now. What in the HELL Haslam is thinking is beyond anyone with a rational mind.

Generally, when you’re trying to be the smartest guy in the room, you’re the dumbest. Quit trying to re-invent the wheel. The hell with analytics… go out and spend your money on FOOTBALL people. Like Herm Edwards said… you need a coach and GM, and everyone else get out of the way. It’s that simple.

But of course, not in Cleveland…

We are so screwed.

I think teams use analytics waaaay more than fans think. Perhaps not to the extent that Cleveland is going all in on it but I think they all use it extensively...for years.

No doubt about that.  If I were a Cleveland fan I'd feel much better if a grinder like Gettleman were doing the analysis rather than a lawyer and a baseball GM.

Might as well hire Marty Hurney and make it a hat trick.

I wouldn't trade what we have for anyone but as a fan I could get behind what they're trying. I'm an optimist though.

Browns gonna Brown.

It will be interesting to watch what happens with their non conventional approach during the next few seasons (if it lasts that long).

Just glad JR finally came around to realizing the importance of hiring an actual "football guy" as our GM.

Maybe someday the Browns ownership will figure it out.

If the Browns guy is a true scout and manager of scouting like Gettleman then I can see what they are hoping for.  Smart people are successful in multiple arenas wHethersett it be different types of business or different sports.

    • Hope Koch recovers (he’s stated numerous times he doesn’t like to be called “koochie”) soon. But he does not instill confidence in the crease. I don’t have any confidence in any of our goalies, healthy or not. Andersen when available gives us the best chance to win but he’s never available.    Team has to explore trade options soon.
    • Respectfully, I completely disagree. Last year we were:  32nd in Sacks. 32nd in Turnovers.  32nd in Rushing TDs allowed  29th in Scoring.  We were absolutely atrocious on defense last year and that was with a full stable of weapons in Derek Brown, Frankie Luvu and Brian Burns that played all 17 games.  Using yards per game as a metric to guage our success lacks the context that because our offense was so inept teams were not driving the length of the field, they were starting at their 40-50 yard line.  This year, our Defense ranks:  31st in Sacks. Tied for 19th in Turnovers  31st in Rushing TDs allowed 32nd in Scoring  His defense fails to get pressure, fails to turn the ball over and fails to stop the run. Three things you absolutely have to do to be successful in the NFL.  Denver meanwhile has not missed a beat without him.  If another team wants to hire him as a HC and the Panthers get two 3rds for it I'll wish him the best and pack his bags myself.
