I think the Shula approach of telling people to wait....looks better if you are a potential future employer.

I doubt it. Teams don't want to delay their searches for a month until after the Super Bowl. Really the only time teams wait that long is when they are waiting specifically on a guy from a Super Bowl team like the Falcons did last year with Quinn. Most hires are wrapped up by then and if they aren't they usually don't want to wait that long to start the interview process.

That may be true but if you aren't interested, but would you waste TONS of hours (prep time, travel, interview time) to interview for a job you don't want?

If I considered it as a practice interview and prep for an interview for a job that I actually wanted then yes I would do that.

I mean, I trust Ron and Wilks to handle defensive crap just as much as McDermott.

If he goes to interview then I'm not phased and I don't think the team will be too. We are crazy rich with defensive coaching talent.

I agree, and as much as I love McD I think we'd be better with Wilks. That's who Rivera wanted from the start and I'm pretty sure Rivera is the defensive mind behind our defense, not McD.

It's in his best interest to put him out there. I don't blame him one bit. It's what he has to do to become a head coach. It's part of the game.

I feel that all the people hating on McDermitt don't know how difficult it is to move up and get promoted in your CAREER field. Personally, any advantage I can get when applying for a promotion I'm going to take it.

On the flip side, they're people that never want to climb up the chain and are perfectly content in the position they hold. I picture Shula as this type of person. I can't imagine  him being a (successful) HC. He doesn't seem the type of person that can lead the troops down 21 points going into halftime.

Point being, to say that one of these guys is more focused at the task at hand than the other because he went to an interview would be a stretch. Now I'd understand if McD was out on vactaion in Hawaii all week.

1) I agree there is risk going to Cleveland and while money is not everything, if they offered a 4 year contract @ $4 mil per, it would be hard to turn it down regardless.

2) These guys are successful, largely, because they are driven and confident. Most men in these positions don't go into it thinking they may be 6 - 26 after two season and get fired. They are thinking, 'All I have to do is get this team to 6 - 10, then 8 - 8, then 10-6 and I'll be a hero.

Not to mention that this would be fully guaranteed so even if he flames out, he's got a huge chunk of change and can easily get another DC job somewhere afterwards.
