I've met a couple other Panther fans who work in media too.  It can happen!

This could be the start of something special.  Message me when you get a chance and we can see where we're at.

Monsta, in the Greensboro area, $500k will get you a mansion on over an acre of land at the country club just off of Lake Higgins. You'd also be about three or four minutes from where Ricky Proehl has Proehlific Park.  For example:

Crank it back to $379k and the places are still pretty incredible:

I mean, really, why would anyone want to pay so much for so little in California or the northeast?

I hear you. Honestly I've always loved California. I love the weather (humidity is going to kill me wherever I go), I love that I'm a 3 hour drive from my shitty little cabin in Lake Tahoe where we can snowboard or go on the lake during the summer, I like that I am a 45 minute to an hour drive to the Pacific Ocean, I love that my town has like 5 craft breweries and something like 50 wineries too.

But as I get older I find myself hating the crowds and the people more and more. Maybe I'm just less and less tolerant of others. I'm a season ticket holder for both the A's and The Warriors, so I'll definitely miss that, but at least the Panthers would be close to me.

I can just tell that my wife wants to have a couple children and I really don't want to do that unless she can stay home and raise them right. I don't want to pay $2500/month for some stranger to raise my babies. So we've started talking about options and of course I brought up NC.

Im going to show her some pictures of these houses when I get home tonight. 3500 sq ft on a lake might be the thing that convinces her.

Either way it'll still be a couple of years away from now because I won't leave until my daughter has gone off to college.

I'm just trying to get a head start on research so that when the time comes, I can boogie on out of here.

Seriously appreciate the info though!

I didn't read this entire thread, I might be repeating someone. Just keep in mind our cost of living is lower but so is our pay. You might not make the same wages here that you do currently.

No one has answered me yet. Can you buy a house for <$500K in any of these places being mentioned?

Yes, for sure you can get a nice house for $500K in Raleigh, Charlotte, Charleston, Asheville, Greenville, SC and etc.  If you live in CA now, you may not make as much income but the cost of living is lower.

I just want to go home, period.

I live in Lehigh Valley (Bethlehem) and work in the Poconos (Swiftwater).

I am from NC and ended up in PA after a divorce and needed a job and a change.  I'm done with change and wanna go home and am working on my plan.  I lived in Durham but technically was right in the heart of RTP.  I loved living in RTP because you get a similar feel and lifestyle of "biggish" city but laid back life very similar to the speed of Lehigh Valley.  You can almost feel like you live in the sticks in certain pockets of RDU yet be a quick hop on I 40 or I85 to urban areas.  RTP is great for single professionals and young families and has a lot to offer.  It was great since I was strategically placed to go to Pirate football games on Saturdays and Panthers on Sundays.

That being said - I would NOT turn down a job that takes me to the greater Charlotte area (NC or SC) because most of my family is in the Winston-Salem area.

Good luck - working on the potential jobs in both areas currently and will buy my PSLs once I am back in NC again!!!

5degrees F and windy is TOO dang cold and I am tired of winters in PA!!

Yeah I understand that. That's why I'd like to get a house I can pay off so that I can be ok financially even if I don't make what I'm used to out here. I appreciate everyone's input though seriously.

I'ts funny quite a few years back I made a very similar thread to this in The Lounge. The wife and I were seriously considering such a move but then the real estate market took a huge dump before I could cash out equity. Waiting and considering my options when the California real estate market fully recovers. Not going to consider liquidation until then, not gonna walk away from 200 to 250k.

Yeah that's kind of where I sit. My house has nearly $400K right now in equity and I figure it'll be closer to $500K in 3 years when I'm ready to pull the trigger. My company has offices in Charlotte and are very accommodating when it comes to moving families. I figure even with a pay cut I'd be ok in NC as the sole provider, assuming my house is paid off or my mortgage is sub-$100k.

Right now in the bay me and my wife both make a damn good living and we do ok but I can't imagine having two or three more kids here.

Good plan, my daughter will be done with College in about 3 years so depending what she chooses as a career and where settles it may just be us we have to worry about.

Sticker for my car is less than 50 bucks. Are you talking about taxes?

Yes, NC is one of the few states where you pay property taxes on your vehicle every single year. That's what I was talking about - paying the money. Not necessarily to transfer his title.

Yeah it blows hard, especially Mecklenburg County.  My taxes for my Vette were $600 this year, registered up in Iredell county at my lakehouse for $200.   Char-Meck is great unless you own something...

Raleigh/Durham has forever suffered from little brother syndrome and it shows in your post...without getting into details I would just say me and my wife moved to Charlotte six years ago from Gainesville Florida and we couldn't be happier.

It sounds like OP were a bit like us...keep in mind Raleigh/Durham has much more of a college age demographic and we were looking to get out of that environment coming from Gainesville. We had moved on a bit from that part of our life and wanted something else. We wanted to be part of a community where things are happening but get away somewhat from the college crowd. But thing is even if you want that you have areas like SouthEnd that has that feel to it.

South Charlotte is our next move and we are currently looking for a house somewhere in that area. That may even include Rock Hill for all we know. But it is all part of the greater Charlotte region and we will always be part of that.

So wait you have never lived in Raleigh but can speak in depth to it?
