It depends on what you want.  I live in Winston Salem, and I like living here, primarily because I am close to family and friends.  The cost of living is low and its small enough that traffic is not bad, but big enough to have a decent selection of restaurants.  Its two hours to the Mountains (less if you consider Pilot Mountain) and 3.5 hours to the coast.  20 minutes to Greensboro, 1.5 hours to BOA stadium, and 2 hours to Raleigh.  So its a nice central location.  No hurricanes to worry about, and very few major snow/ice storms.

IMO, the most important criteria if I were to move would be work.  Fortunately, my employer allows me to work remote, so even if they closed up shop in Winston, I would still be able to keep my job as long as the position itself doesn't go away.  But I would look at what area is best for whatever work you are doing or want to do.

I live in Charlotte and love it.  But given your specific background and potential earning power as a family, I would say Raleigh-Durham area.  You can always catch the Amtrak to Charlotte on game weekends.  Construction timelines have already been put in place to build Charlotte Grand Central Station, and the commuter train from Charlotte stops in the heart of Uptown, one block from BoA.

Anywhere in NC or SC will be better than PA.  The weather, cost of living, taxes, close to the beach & mountains, and etc will be a nice change from where you currently live.  However, I think the job will dictate where you live. What type of field you are in will probably help you decide which city best suits your needs.  In Raleigh, there are lots of high tech/computer jobs (IBM, SAS, Cysco, Red Hat, Epic Games & etc) due to Research Triangle Park.  Charlotte is the bank capital of the USA, and also has many other diversified companies that offer employment.  Charleston, SC is a very unique city and offers lots of employment in the tourist & art industry.  They also just added a huge Boeing plant there.  Greenville, SC has a BMW plant as well as other manufacturing type jobs.  I don't think you can go wrong with any city in North or South Carolina...it just depends on the job situation.

No one has answered me yet. Can you buy a house for <$500K in any of these places being mentioned?

Are Mountain Island Lake or Lake Norman nice places to live? And how long would it take to get to Downtown Charlotte from there?

Very nice, a little upscale, can be pricey. I've looked at houses on the lake I'd say the nice ones are 400K and go on up from there.

Lake Norman area is only about 30 min and has quite a bit of affluent people in the neighborhood and some astoundingly beautiful and pricey homes.

Mountain Island Lake is further up 77 about 44-45min and is a very nice up and coming lake community, very nice lake homes and good schools. Very nice places if you like lake living.

Traffic is horrible when girls on boats flash their boobs to everybody on the 77 overpass. I've damn near seen accidents. Horrible!!!

Thanks!

My wife and I have been talking about having kids (I have a daughter from a previous "relationship" who is almost 15 now) but in order to do that I don't want her working. We can't afford the Bay Area without two incomes, so we've been talking about selling our house here and going somewhere else so we can start a family. I've looked at comps in my area and figure I can sell my place for maybe $850K so I'd like to be able to buy something pretty much outright if we go somewhere else so that I'm not too stressed with how much income I need to bring in buy myself.

You'd do really well with what you've got there. You may come out with much much more for your $!

With a budget of $550k, you have A LOT of options! From ridiculous mansions, to nicer areas near Uptown.  You can get near the lakes for that price as well.

I work in the Mountain Island Lake area (cross it every day now), and there are some decent properties around.  I'm sure you'll be able to find what you need with that budget!  The only thing about living near the lakes are the people...sure, there are some wonderful folks, but also some rich, jerk-faced folks who are snobby and rude.  I've seen a fair number of them throughout the years who hail from Lake Norman and Wylie.

I taught in Charlotte-Mecklenburg School for 11 years.  If you need help figuring out those schools (and you buy in the CMS district), I'll be glad to help out!

Monsta, in the Greensboro area, $500k will get you a mansion on over an acre of land at the country club just off of Lake Higgins. You'd also be about three or four minutes from where Ricky Proehl has Proehlific Park.  For example:

Crank it back to $379k and the places are still pretty incredible:

I mean, really, why would anyone want to pay so much for so little in California or the northeast?
